Lead possible spindle whorl, as kindly suggested by the finder. Cast lump with a central moulded hole of diameter 9.5mm [long axis], possibly approaching a conical form, cf. Walton Rogers form A2. Severely distorted with deep scratches and lateral squashing; patinated. If indeed a whorl, and perhaps mis-cast at that, the spindle hole size may hint at an Anglo-Scandinavian date. Suggested date: possibly Early Medieval, 850-1000 Height: 16.7mm, Diameter: 25.3mm, Weight: 34.57gms

Limestone spindle whorl. Plain fat limestone disc with large hole, Walton Rogers form B. The source record alludes to a large hole which may hint at an Anglo-Scandinavian date. The flat cylindrical form is common at Flixborough in a 8th-to-9th-century assemblage, and continues as a popular form into the medieval period. The mass may suggest this example could be used to spin a fine yarn. Stone whorls are much more common than lead when occupation deposits are hand-excavated. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 950-1100 Diameter: 34.5mm, Thickness: 12.5mm, Weight: 18.9gms.

Lead spindle whorl. Plain conical spindle whorl - this reporter (MF) would consider the form plano-convex, Walton Rogers form A1. The mass may suggest a primary function plying cord. The spindle hole size could admit an Anglo-Scandinavian date. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-1000 Diameter: 30.4mm, Thickness: 12.3mm, Weight: 64.54gms

Lead spindle whorl. Cast or mis-cast plano-convex whorl with an off-centre moulded aperture of diameter 12mm, Walton Rogers form A1. The hole is enlarged on the flat side, perhaps by the abrasive action of a line passed through the hole. Patinated overall. The spindle hole size could admit an Anglo-Scandinavian date while the damage at the hole might hint at conversion of a whorl to a line weight. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-950 Diameter: 26.8mm, Thickness: 11.3mm, Weight: 28.66gms

Lead spindle whorl. Cast cylindrical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 10.4mm, Walton Rogers form B; shrinkage lines on one side may suggest this to have been cast in an open mould. Patinated. The spindle hole size may hint at an Anglo-Scandinavian date while the mass may commend a primary function plying cord. Lead spindle whorl. Cast whorl of a thin plano-convex section with a central moulded aperture of diameter 10.4-9.7mm, Walton Rogers form A1, with slight trace of shrinkage lines around the hole, suggesting manufacture in an open mould. A cast lead spindle whorl of Walton Rogers form B2 probably dating from the Early Medieval period, about AD 700 - 850. It has two flat faces of the same size, and curved sides.  It is 25.4mm in diameter and 13.7mm thick with a central perforation of internal diameter 6mm. It weighs 44.7g. Walton Rogers suggests that form B2 whorls appear in York in the 700s, and a central diameter of 6-9mm suggests a date in the early to mid Saxon period.

Most of the marks are radiating grooves, but there are also two X shaped marks, and some of the single lines have possible faint cross strokes. It is 28.3mm in diameter and 10.1mm thick with a central perforation of internal diameter 8.4mm. It weighs 39.7g.

Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 10mm, Walton Rogers form A1. The metal is burred partly across the hole on the convex side. Patinated. Shrinkage lines on the flat upper surface may suggest the object was cast in an open mould. The hole would be apt to receive a spindle of Viking or Anglo-Scandinavian size. Lead probable spindle whorl. Cast discoid whorl, originally of flat cylindrical form, with a central moulded aperture of diameter 11.4mm, cf. Walton Rogers form B. The object now has at least two flat facets on its edge, though has been patinated since this alteration. Shrinkage lines around the hole on one side may suggest casting in an open mould. For a spindle whorl, the large hole might indicate use with an Anglo-Scandinavian spindle, though use as or conversion to a line weight remains possible. Suggested date: Possibly Early Medieval, 1000-1100 Diameter (long axis): 29.2mm, Thic…
