An incomplete pottery spindle whorl of probable Roman or Early-Medieval date. Half of the object is missing due to old breaks. It is formed from a sherd of very micaceous Roman grey ware vessel with roughly rounded edges giving an approximately circular form. At the centre of the object is an incomplete circular perforation where the whorl would originally have been suspended. It measures 39.69mm in surviving width, 22.54mm in surviving length, 6.55mm in thickness, and weighs 7.05g. A base sherd from a Roman vessel reused as a spindle whorl. The fabric of the pottery is sandy and has been fired bright orange on the outside with some of the grey core remaining internally. The sherd appears to come from the base of the vessel as there is a slight lip, or raised pedestal base element on one side. The pottery sherd has been pierced to allow the spindle to fit in. The spindle whorl measures 39.04mm diameter and is 10.53mm thick. It weighs 18.6gms. The pottery sherd dates from the 3rd - 4th century.

An incomplete Roman pottery spindle whorl. Only half of the spindle whorl survives. The circular spindle whorl is oval in section with flat faces and the remains of a central circular hole. The fabric is light grey with a dark grey exterior on one face. There are very frequent sub-round sandy inclusions and occasional sparkly inclusions which are possibly mica. The diameter is 45.3mm, the diameter of the central hole is 7.9mm and the weight is 16.04g.

A Roman pottery base from a closed vessel probably of jar form of Much Hadham ware, oxidised of late 3rd-4th century date. This base has a circular hole drilled through its centre post firing and has been filed flat, it has therefore been re-used at a later date either by the Romans or Anglo-Saxons to make a weight or spindle whorl.

Pottery spindle whorl, circular in section and flat in profile, with one side flatter and less eroded than the other. The central circular bore hole measures about 8 mm in diameter. The fabric is an orange colour throughout and contains mica, felspar, augite and quartzite inclusions, which suggest that it was made from gabbroic clay, originating from the Lizard in Cornwall. Romano-British, judging from the date of the majority of finds that it was found with. Quinnell (2004) illustrates a similar example from Trethurgy on page 143, Fig.68, No.31 which is dated to the later stage…

A Medieval - Post Medieval pottery spindle whorl made from stone ware, probably Langewehe, Belgium (late 15th – early 16th century). The spindle whorl has convex sides and slightly concave upper and lower surfaces. The central circular perforation has a diameter of 8.98mm. The spindle whorl is decorated with bands of horizontal incised lines around the midpoint. Dimensions: diameter: 27.34mm; thickness: 21.89mm; weight: 17.92g. Identified by Geoff Egan.

A Roman pottery rim fragment from a flagon (AD50-170). The fabric is white and sandy with irregular quartz and some mica inclusions. It resembles Verulamium Region White Ware. The sherd has been trimmed and it is very abraded probably through use. This suggests the rim was reused probably as a spindle whorl or possibly as a weight. The reuse could date Roman – Early Medieval - Anglo-Saxon (AD50-AD1066). Dimensions: diameter of the central hole: 21mm; diameter of rim: 46mm; thickness: 17mm; weight: 24.86g.

A perforated sub-circular object bearing incised decoration on one side. It is presumed to be a weight, possibly a spindle whorl, although it has been made from a light-weight, pumice-like material, which is granular in texture and has a mottled appearance. Each side of the object has an uneven surface and a number of chips around the edge. Although there is decoration on one side, the other side has at least one groove running across it. Pottery disc, circular in plan, apart from one broken edge, and convex in profile. It was probably cut and ground from a pottery sherd as a blank for a spindle whorl, but may not have been used because of its concave / convex profile. The surface and core of the sherd have been reduced to an dark brown to black colour. There are carbonised remains on the interior surface of the sherd or the underside of the disc. Spindle whorl made from a piece of coarse-ware pottery or tile of Roman date (50-450 AD). The spindle whorl is sub-circular in plan, its diameter measures 33.4mm and is 10.9mm thick. There is a circular hole pierced through the whorl and this is set slightly off centre. The diameter of the hole measures 7.1mm. The whorl weighs 15.42 grams. A weight or whorl of globular form with a central hole, apparently made of a ceramic material which now has the appearance of soft, whitish stone. The diameter is 23mm, the thickness 13mm, and the gauge of the hole 8mm. The object overall is subspherical and slightly irregular in form. It may be a spindle-whorl, but if so it is a very small one. If it had some other use as a pendant weight, it shows no sign of wear through motion against a string or thrum passing through the hole. the walls of the perforation are quite straight-sided.
