An incomplete pottery spindle whorl of probable Roman or Early-Medieval date. Half of the object is missing due to old breaks. It is formed from a sherd of very micaceous Roman grey ware vessel with roughly rounded edges giving an approximately circular form. At the centre of the object is an incomplete circular perforation where the whorl would originally have been suspended. It measures 39.69mm in surviving width, 22.54mm in surviving length, 6.55mm in thickness, and weighs 7.05g. A Roman pottery base from a closed vessel probably of jar form of Much Hadham ware, oxidised of late 3rd-4th century date. This base has a circular hole drilled through its centre post firing and has been filed flat, it has therefore been re-used at a later date either by the Romans or Anglo-Saxons to make a weight or spindle whorl.

A weight or whorl of globular form with a central hole, apparently made of a ceramic material which now has the appearance of soft, whitish stone. The diameter is 23mm, the thickness 13mm, and the gauge of the hole 8mm. The object overall is subspherical and slightly irregular in form. It may be a spindle-whorl, but if so it is a very small one. If it had some other use as a pendant weight, it shows no sign of wear through motion against a string or thrum passing through the hole. the walls of the perforation are quite straight-sided.
