Fragment of copper alloy spatulate-shaped object with wider crescentic end, slightly in-curving sides and broken narrow end. The cross-section is sub-oval at the narrow end and a thin lenticular shape at the wider end. Longitudinally it tapers in thickness narrowing equally from both sides as it approaches the wider end. The object has some remains of a dark brown patination but in the majority it is corroded back to a mottled green. There is no sign of decoration. The surviving evidence stops just short of making the object fully diagnostic of date and purpose, but on balance it is m…

A cast copper alloy miniature object or pendant in the form of an axe, probably dating from the Roman period, although a Late Bronze age or Iron Age chronology cannot be ruled out, consequently a broad range of 1200 BCAD 410 is suggested. The axe, of broadly sub-rectangular section, is thickest at the butt and tapers in section to a curved asymmetrical cutting edge. The upper edges has a shallow curve, while the lower edge has a steeper curve and accommodates a perforated loop towards the butt. The object's olive green patina is patchy and corroded. It has a length of 25.80mm, a …

A complete cast lead artefact of unknown date, Roman to Post Medieval about AD 43-1800. It could be a miniature object of Roman date in the form of a axe, or it may be a small perforated weight of Medieval to post Medieval date. The object is wedge shaped, nearly circular in cross section at the thicker end and tapering to a broad rounded wedge. There is a near circular hole through the wider end from the front to the back rather than side to side. the hole measures 3.8mm diameter. There are very slight traces of wear, perhaps suggesting a cord ran through the hole. The object has a s…

A complete copper-alloy miniature flat axehead of early Bronze Age date, c.2150 - 1500 BC. The axehead is sub-trapezoidal with a curved blade tapering to a rounded cutting edge. The sides are slightly concaved and the axehead is undecorated. The metal has a dark green/brown patina and is worn. The axehead is 44.8mm long, 18.3mm tapering to 4.4mm wide, 4mm thick and weighs 9.4g. This object is too small to have functioned as an axe and current archaeological thinking suggests they played a role in votive/ritual practices or functioned as amulets. The head is ornate with a stylised hook or claw at the back end,the face and one cheek are also heavily stylised but quite worn so the detail isn't certain. A Roman cast copper alloy votive axe, 26.6mm in length. The axe has a long handle and a flat head of trapezoidal form with straight sides, a flared blade and tapering butt. There is a knop at the top of the blade representing the end of the handle shaft which appears to be made from a separate piece of copper alloy metal which has been soldered on. Both sides of the axe have incised linear decoration which appears to take the form of parallel lines, oblique feathered lines and a zig-zag line.

An incomplete probably Roman copper alloy miniature socketed axehead, of Robinson's (1995) type III, probably dating to c. AD 44-410. The miniature axehead is triangular in cross section tapering to a point at the cutting edge. In profile the upper edge of the blade is straight, whilst the lower edge expands downwards into the cutting edge, creating a 'drooping' appearance. A damaged or deformed depression (one side missing) imitates the socket at the mouth of the axehead. A small downward facing knop and associated semi-circular depression in the lower edge of axe suggests a vestigia…

Copper alloy miniature object. Solid cast sub-triangular flat-sided pendant with a drilled apical hole of diameter 2.1mm, smoothed overall by wear. Probably representing the blade of an axe. The form may suggest this to be derived from the series of axe-shaped votive or amuletic pendants and miniatures, often taking archaic forms though usually ascribed a Romano-British date.
