Viking belt buckle with plate, pin preserved. Frame oval with animal head, plate with very stylised animals and geometric decoration. 2 rivets still in place. Similar to an example excavated at St Faith's Lane, Norwich (Popescu forthcoming). Other less complete examples are known from Fishergate, York (Rogers 1993, figs. 650 and 652, nos. 5314 and 5320) and a strap-end decorated with similar multiple Borre-style heads was excavated in Norwich (Margeson 1993, fig. 20, no. 227). Such strap-ends are Thomas's Class B, Type 4 (Thomas 2003, fig. 2, nos. 16-17).

Square little Anglo-Saxon buckle, buckle and plate cast in one, back separate and riveted on, plate terminating in a broad animals head. Iron pin. This was originally thought to be of Viking date but Helen Geake kindly comments as follows: 'This one anyway is paralleled at Fishergate so I think is 9th century and Anglo-Saxon rather than 11th and Anglo-Scand. Compare SWYOR-CB35F3'.

D-shaped buckle with animal head protruding, Viking, Urnes/Ringerike style. No pin. Helen Geake writes: Although the original description identified this as Urnes/Ringerike style, it seems more like the series of buckles decorated with Borre-style animal heads, as exemplified by the complete example at NLM730.

Copper-alloy buckle frame with incomplete integral plate. The frame is D-shaped and has a knop at either end of the 'bar', plus three more knops around the outer edge. There is a notch cut out of the interior edge of the 'bar', next to the circular pin hole, to allow the (missing) pin to swivel freely. The 'bar' is decorated with a double rouletted line of punchmarks. The plate was perhaps originally rectangular, but the attachment end is missing. It has a geometric design of similar rouletting, and a rivet hole in each surviving corner forming a line with the pin hole. One copp…

Strap-end. The main body of the strap-end is D-shaped in section; the top is flattened and split, with a single iron rivet. The flat area is decorated with four rather wiggly vertical rows of tiny punchmarks. The rest of the strap-end has decoration derived from animal heads, but now stylised to the point where it appears merely as a series of transverse grooves and mouldings. The topmost moulding is large and flat-topped, and decorated with two eccentrically placed dots which may be intended to represent eyes. A little way down the strap-end are three transverse grooves and then anot…

Copper-alloy object, perhaps a strap-fitting. One right-angled corner survives, with surviving dimensions of 25 x 33 mm. The two surviving edges both have angled flanges on the reverse, and also on the reverse is a chunky but broken pierced D-shaped lug. The front is corroded but many of the details of the decoration can be seen. There are three rectangular bosses, all with the remains of sheet silver covering them. The most complete area of silver retains some irregular diagonal cross-hatched grooves. The bosses sit on top of relief ribbons which curve around in a rather angular…

Early Anglo-Saxon cast copper-alloy mount in the form of a bearded and moustached bust surmounted with horns. On the flat reverse are three integrally cast, round-sectioned, tapering, blunt spikes. The nose and eyes are in high relief and the hair, beard and moustache are picked out by closely spaced vertical, horizontal and diagonal grooves, and in part outlined by lines in relief. Both ends of the drooping moustache project beyond the outline of the face. The pointed-oval mouth and the non-bearded parts of the cheeks are emphasised by their plainness. The horns spring directly …

A beautiful cast copper alloy ornate late early-medieval buckle frame in excellent condition. This buckle frame is oval in shape and measures 27mm in length and 26mm in width. This frame is decorated on its convex front face around its outer edge with a curving Urnes-style ribbon beast, with head adjoining one end of the pin bar, and its hindquarters adjoining the other end. A diagonal bar runs between the interlace decoration and there is a square protrusion projecting from the outer edge of it. The bar of this buckle frame is cylindrical in shape. A complete copper alloy buckle frame. It is roughly D-shaped and measures 25mm in length and 20mm in width. The outer edge is expanded and decorated with possibly a foliage or zoomorphic design, however, it is now worn and the exact nature of the decoration can no longer be clearly seen. The bar is circular in cross section and narrowed and offset slightly for the missing plate. The front face of this buckle is convex and the back face is flat. A similar shaped buckle, although with more intricate zoomorphic decoration, was found at Chilton and is Viking in date.

Copper alloy buckle plate. The attachment end is a plain split end with a single central rivet hole. The plate tapers from the attachment end towards a very stylised animal head made up of three transverse mouldings. The first is the tallest, with raised semi-circular ears with blind-drilled centres; the next moulding has drilled eyes and the third represents the animal's nose or muzzle. Part of a second, even more schematic head faces the first, with a low moulding for the nose and a second beyond. The plate then ends in two cast hinge loops. The zoomorphic features are very worn. This is apparently a Viking-age belt-buckle, and is a composite production having a cast frame, a pin cut from sheet, and a folded over sheet metal plate for attachment to the belt. The cast frame is D-shaped, the pin-bar representing the straight bar of the D and the fore-edge being entirely rounded. The curving part of the frame ends in two animal-head terminals which project back beyond the pin-bar, and have squared snouts and pairs of rounded set-back ears. A third beast-head of the same kind appears projecting outward from the fore-edge at the central point of its bow. This is so…

Copper alloy buckle dating to 11th century. The buckle frame is square shaped with a narrow bar. The part of the frame opposite the bar is wider and decorated. The decoration is worn but could be a leaf or knot design (possibly Viking Borre style) at the top and bottom with a notch for the pin between. The front decorated face of the buckle has evidence of gilding whilst the reverse of the buckle has been silvered or tinned although only part of this surface treatment survives. The buckle weighs 5.5g and measures 22mm in width, 21.5mm in length and 4.2mm in thickness.

The object is a possible vessel escutcheon. It is made from cast copper alloy. A similar escutcheon has can be found in Bruce-Mitford (Pre-Viking Lindsey, ed. By Alan Vince) from Sleaford. The zoomorphic design is different, but the general shape is similar. The Sleaford example dates to the late 4th to 5th centuries. The style of the zoomorphic detail on the escutcheon is reminiscent of late 4th to 5th century buckles, Dunning and Hawkes (1961), Figure 18, Nos. d, f and g. The upper 'hook' portion of the escutcheon appears to represent a possibly dolphin with a snub nose. In profil…
