The finder believes it is a brooch, but there does not appear to be any remnant of a catch plate, pin, or needle. Probably a Medieval mount. The object is made from a thin, circular sheet of iron, as indicated by the colour of rust. Around the edge of the object, there are 20 small lugs, evenly spaced and each measuring around 1.31mm long and 1.38mm wide. There is an external outer rim that the lugs are connected to that is around 0.64mm thick. The diameter of the object, including the lugs, is 17.33mm. The diameter without the lugs is 14.71mm. The face of the object is dec…

Part of a large, Early Medieval gilded copper alloy sheet mount with slightly concave sides and chip carved spiralling interlace decoration, probably of 8th century date. The fragment has part of one long edge which has a shallow, concave, curve. There is an unrecessed border along this edge from which an unrecessed line projects at right angled to bisect part of a unrecessed line circle before ending in a circular hole in the opposite, broken edge. It seems likely that the mount, or this part of it, was symmetrical with a central circular hole encircled by a plain line circle and fou…

An incomplete copper-alloy Iron Age to Roman probable mount, dating to 100 BC - AD 100. It consists of a trefoil plate, which has an incomplete lug at this back; the lug is rectangular in cross-section and might have been pierced. The front of the mount has a moulded decoration consisting of three adjoining circles, which have a raised border and an oval shallow recess at the centre. The field inside the circles is pitted and worn and it might house an enamel inlay. The edges of the plate are damaged and the surfaces are abraded. Trefoil mounts and brooches are known in the Early M…

Early Medieval (c. 6th century) mount: The copper alloy mount is a trefoil in plan which has a central boss and the arms, which are rounded triangles in plan, protrude from the boss. The arms are each decorated with a border of double-stranded grooves with transverse grooves forming a row of blocks. This decoration is more visible in the crevices near the boss, and this is where gilding remains. In profile the boss and arms are domed. The majority of the upper surface is abraded so has no gilding, and no decoration, if there were any decoration, is visible. The reverse of the mount is…

A rectangular object, probably a mount, cast in copper alloy of probable late early-medieval date (c. 9th/10th century AD). Broadly rectangular, it has slightly concave long sides. Both short ends are slightly ragged with irregular protrusions, it is unclear whether these are unfinished or old breaks. It is probable the object previously continued below the lower edge where there is the stub of a projection which is narrower than the existing piece. A zoomorphic design fills the field which is bordered all around with a plain raised border. Made in sunken low relief the device is a…
