A late Early-Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian) copper-alloy anthropomorphic mount, probably from a stirrup terminal and 20.3mm in length. The terminal is triangular in cross section and overall shape. The decoration unusually is not zoomorphic, instead having a moulded ridge around the wide end, from which a subrectangular lobe projects up the centre of the plate and with the narrower portion of the object tapering to a break with incised lines along the margin. The whole can be interpreted as an anthropomorphic mask, with a nose, heavy brows, lines for a beard and faint mouth. T…

A very worn, cast copper alloy late Early Medieval zoomorphic stirrup terminal, of the Anglo-Scandinavian period. The upper part of the terminal is a hollow U-shaped triangle, one return of which is missing from an old worn break. The U-section tapers to an internal ledge on which the iron footrest of the stirrup would have been located and soldered. An internal cusp leads to a solid triangular projection the outside face of which is moulded, probably representing a zoomorphic beast's head, but is now far too worn and eroded to be resolvable as such. The form of…
