A very worn, cast copper alloy late Early Medieval zoomorphic stirrup terminal, of the Anglo-Scandinavian period. The upper part of the terminal is a hollow U-shaped triangle, one return of which is missing from an old worn break. The U-section tapers to an internal ledge on which the iron footrest of the stirrup would have been located and soldered. An internal cusp leads to a solid triangular projection the outside face of which is moulded, probably representing a zoomorphic beast's head, but is now far too worn and eroded to be resolvable as such. The form of…

An incomplete copper alloy stiurrup terminal dating to the early medieval period (c.AD 1000-1100). The object is broadly U-shaped in section and has worn breaks on each side. The surface is moulded with decoration, likely zoomorphic, however it is too incomplete. It has a smooth light green patina. Dimensions: Length 25.3mm; width 12.5mm; thickness 1.8mm; weight 3.7g Similar are illustrated in Williams 1997 FRG Datasheet 24.

A cast copper alloy late Early Medieval stirrup terminal of the Anglo-Scandinavian period dating from about AD 1000 - 1100  The terminal is roughly U shaped in section with a hollow slot on the reverse which would have held the iron stirrup arm. It has a rounded pointed termial, and a double raised collar at the other end.  It is 25.8mm long, 10.1mm wide and weighs  8.88  thick, and weighs 7.5g. A similar example is SWYOR-4C69F1 and see https://finds.org.uk/counties/findsrecordingguides/stirrup-terminals/.

An incomplete copper alloy stirrup terminal of Early Medieval date (c.AD 950-1000). The terminal is hollowed with a convex face, which has two moulded transverse grooves running across it. There are three knops that project from the base, two smaller ones on each side and a longer rectangular one at the terminal. The reverse is hollow and concave. The object has an overall green patina with smaller areas of brown, particularly on the ridges.  The socket is rectangular in plan and C-shaped in section. Dimensions: Length 48.7mm, Width 14.6mm, Thickness 14.7mm, Weight 24.79g. …

Complete late early-medieval copper-alloy stirrup terminal with a flat trefoil finial. The socket is semi-cylindrical in cross section, open at the rear and the top. The front and sides are decorated at the top with a pair of transverse ridges approximately nine millimetres apart. The space in-between is both transversally and longitudinally convex (so somewhat hemispherical). The trefoil plate projects downward, slightly forward and laterally from the bottom-front of the socket. The lateral foils are crescent-like, curving upward, while the central foil is sub-circular. Incomplete late early-medieval copper-alloy stirrup terminal with a flat trefoil finial. The socket is semi-cylindrical in cross section, open at the rear and the top. Parts of the edges in both places are now lost to worn breaks. The front is decorated near the bottom with a transverse ridge, below which are two shallow transverse grooves. The trefoil plate projects downward and laterally just below these. The lateral foils are each decorated with a single shallow crescent-shaped groove. The central foil bears a pair of these, which meet each other at their distal tips to create a lea…

Late Saxon copper alloy stirrup terminal of trilobate foot-like form (Williams 1997 Finds Research Group Datasheet 24, fig. 5). The top is marked by a pair of transverse rib. There is insufficient depth within the object for the corner of a stirrup to gain sufficient purchase because the space is largely taken up with an excess of lead solder. Height 27mm. Width 25.8mm. Unidentified and incomplete copper-alloy object of unknown but perhaps early-medieval or medieval date. It may be zoomorphic and it bears a resemblance to a late early-medieval Anglo-Scandinavian stirrup terminal mount, but it doesn't have a channel or recess to receive the stirrup. If it is indeed zoomorphic (this could be a subjective interpretation), it seems to be shaped like a fully-rounded quadruped with its rump raised upon semi-erect hind legs and its head down low, resting on or between its forelegs, which lie flat. The limbs are not well defined, but are simply suggest…

Incomplete and unusual post-medieval copper-alloy spur. It is small and perhaps intended for a child. The short and stubby prick is set between four integral cast cylindrical loops arranged in a cross-formation around the thickened terminal of the neck: one on the top, bottom, left and right, as viewed with the tip of the terminal facing. Each cylinder is joined to the terminal side-on (rather than end-on). The top one is about 25 per cent longer than the other three. There appears to be greater wear on the bottom and left ones. The neck itself is lozenge-shaped (equal-sided…

A complete cast copper-alloy late Early Medieval stirrup-strap mount, Williams Class A type 12 (open-work version), dating to the eleventh century (c. AD 1000-1100). The mount is lozenge-shaped with a backwards projecting flange, and an apex loop. There are four lozenge-shaped apertures forming an central diagonal cross. There are eight round raised bosses. The rounded head loop has a central hole and retains an iron fixing. The flange also retains an iron fixing through a central hole. The frame is rectangular in cross-section and several of the edges are rounded due to wear. The lo…

Heavily worn but complete Late Saxon copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of Williams Class A, Type 8. Late Saxon copper alloy cruciform stirrup-strap mount of Williams 1997, Class A, Type 14. The two lower fixing holes are filled with remains of iron rivets and the reverse above the angled flange is covered by rust from the iron fitting. Both sides of the sub-triangular lower arm of the cross are followed by an engraved groove but the rest of the front face has been left undecorated (a horizontal groove along the base may link the ends of the other two but all is obscured by rust).
