An incomplete cast copper-alloy Late Saxon stirrup strap mount of Williams' (1997, p. 77) Class A, Type 14 dating AD 1000-1100. The object is cruciform in shape with narrow upper and side arms. The upper arm narrows slightly to an old worn transverse break. The side arms taper inwards towards rounded terminals. The lower arm expands into a triangular plate with an inwardly angled flange at the base and two circular perforations in each angle, both with corroded circular-sectioned iron rivets (approximately 4mm diameter). One corner of the flange is missing but the piece is otherwise c…

A cast copper-alloy Anglo-Saxon/Anglo-Scandinavian stirrup terminal of eleventh century date. The terminal is in the form of a stylised animal or beast. The body of the object consists of an elongated semi-circular sectioned arm with a wide transverse collar at its upper edge that has a narrower collar above and below it. The arm itself is crescentic in cross-section but still encloses the remains of the iron stirrup. The arm extends into an ornate zoomorphic terminal which is in the form of a crested coiled creature that curves back on itself and joins with the arm to create a circul…

A complete cast copper-alloy late Early Medieval stirrup-strap mount, Williams Class A type 12 (open-work version), dating to the eleventh century. The mount is lozenge-shaped with a horizontal inwardly folded base and an apex loop. The central frame is rectangular in cross-section and several of the edges are rounded due to wear. There are four lozenge-shaped apertures, each varied in size, forming an enclosed diagonal cross. The loop is D-shape in cross-section with a circular aperture through the centre. The base is broadly L-shaped in cross-section and tapers to a pointed terminal…

A complete copper alloy Stirrup-Strap Mount of Early-Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian) date (AD 1000-1100). The object is sub-triangular in plan. The top of the mount is rounded and has a circular perforation within the centre of the upper projection. The plate is slightly concave to the front of the plate. The upper perforation is flanked by two knops around the edge of the stirrup-strap mount. From these knops the plate widens to a maximum width of 29.36mm which is marked by a second lower pair of rounded knops. Between the upper and lower knops the plate expands at a point which i…

A complete late Saxon stirrup strap mount of Williams Class A, Type 2. It is sub-triangular and convex, cast from copper alloy, dating to c. AD 1000 - 1100. It measures 53mm in total length and 35mm in maximum width; it weighs 24.4g. The longer sides curve outwards down the frame from just below the apex. If drawing a circle from the centre of the frame, the outer curved edges to the left and the right form a circle with a radius of 17mm. The short edge at the bottom of the frame is 14.5mm wide and each end terminates with a downward protrusion, each measuring approximately 4.2mm w…

A complete or almost complete late Early-Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian) c.11th century copper-alloy zoomorphic stirrup terminal. The stirrup terminal is 'C' shaped in cross section, with a hollow socketed reverse. Lighter corrosion product within the socket is indicative of lead solder. Remains of what appears to be an integral plate seem to cover the socket however very little of this survives meaning that the funtion of this copper-alloy protrusion is uncertain. This might possibly be one of the terminals that Williams discusses as potentially having been cast with the stirrup in pos…

This bar has a sub-D shaped cross-section the inner edge being slightly straighter than the outer edge and upper and lower surfaces. This bar accounts for 2.4mm of the total length. An incomplete cast copper-alloy Early-Medieval/Anglo-Scandinavian stirrup mount of Williams' Class B. It is missing the upper half and one side of the mount due to old breaks. The surviving areas of the mount have openwork decoration comprising the remains of two sub-triangular apertures at the base of the mount, above which are the remains of a central circular(?) aperture. At the centre of the base and to one side of the central aperture where it terminates in old breaks are traces of moulded decoration of uncertain form, comprising small projecting lobes. At one end (base?) of the front face is a raised square shaped moulding that is decorated with knops in each corner and a central vertical ridge. There is a slight transverse collar at the opposite end but not other decorative elements remain visible. Fragment of an unidentified copper-alloy object in the form of a wolf's head in 11th-century Anglo-Scandinavian style, perhaps related zoomorphic spurs or stirrup terminals. The object consists of a short, square section of metal 4.74mm sq. which is broken off 6.28mm from the ears of the wolf. The object flares out to form the head of the animal and then tapers to a rounded point to form the snout. The metal is pierced to form two holes either side of the head, representing the eyes and nostrils of the creature. Length; 30.30mm; width: 10.88mm; weight: 6.05g. Compare GLO-961A…

A copper-alloy stirrup mount of probable 11th century AD date. This piece is classified as a variation on Williams' Class B, Type 3, Group 2 mounts (Williams; 1997; pp. 92). It is stylistically similar to no. 429, but is an interesting addition to the group, in that it clearly depicts a stag, whereas the animal shown in most examples of this type is rarely clear. The plate is roughly trapezoidal, the upper edge increasing slightly in height towards the central apex loop. The design is depicted through the use of raised mouldings, indented lines and five apertures. In contrast to the c…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy late Anglo-Saxon stirrup strap mount of Williams Class A Type 3 (Williams 1997, 36-39, fig 25). Only the lower third of this stirrup strap mount survives the rest is missing due to an old break. As with all Class A mounts this example would have been roughly triangular in shape when complete and has a right angle flange with one central lower circular fixing hole. It measures 23mm in surviving height and 32mm in width. This example is Type 3 as it depicts, using an open work design, a central standing facing man. From what survives you can clearly see…

The whole side of an unusual late Anglo-Saxon, that is Viking Age, stirrup. The stirrup side now consists of a corroded iron core, one of half of which is encased in a copper-alloy sheath. The sheath has a very debased terminal and a decorative knob on the shoulder. It has a U-shaped cross-section, and is slightly curivilinear, measuring 80mm in total length and 12mm in width at its widest point. The debased terminal end projects at about a 45 degree angle from the main body of the sheath and there is a transverse ridge at this point, it then tapers to a point. The incomplete shoulder…
