Record ID: LVPL-24A1AA
Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Wirral
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete lead object, possibly a gaming piece or a weight, possibly dating to the early medieval period onwards (c.AD 850-1700). The object is small conical in shape. The base is round and a small dip in the centre. The surface is undecorated and has a cream / grey patina. Dimensions: Length 15.4mm; diameter (base) 15.24mm; weight 14.69g The exact purpose of the object is uncertain and it may have functioned as a weight or gaming piece. At Torksey (Lincs), the Viking camp/settlement, solid lead pieces were classed as weights and hollow examples as gaming pieces. It is thought…

A lead weight or gaming piece dating from the early medieval period onwards (c.AD 850-1100). The object is conical in shape with an irregular rounded base. A rounded perforation runs vertically through the object, but is not central. It is undecorated and has a mid-grey patina. Dimensions: Length 29.12mm; diameter (base) 20.12mm; weight 44.3g The exact function and date of the object is uncertain. Weights such as these that were found outside of archaeological contexts are difficult to date because their use and style remains continuous from the Roman period onwards. Biggs and Withe…

A complete but slightly worn medieval cast lead-alloy papal bull of Pope Gregory IX dating to 1227-1241. Description: The obverse of the bulla carries the legend GRE/GORIVS/PP.VIIII over three lines within a border of pellets. PP stands for Papa Patria (priest of Rome) or 'Pastor Pastorum' ('Shepherd of Shepherds') and above this is a contraction mark which looks like a flattened omega. The reverse has the heads of St. Peter (right) and St. Paul (left), who face inwards, each surrounded by a beaded border and separated by a small central cross patonce, with legend SPASPE ('Saint…

A complete lead octagonal standing weight of probable medieval or post medieval date. The body is crudely faceted to create eight faces of unequal width. One one of the broadest faces is a modern 'nick' damage which reveals the underlying material and created a slight bulge. On the two opposing broadest faces the weight has an inward step before forming a flattened knop with a convex top, forming the handle. The handle is not pierced. The flat base does not appear octagonal but rather is sub-circular or sub-square shape. It is undecorated apart from a single indentation in one 'corner…

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Doncaster
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead pyramid shaped standing weight of uncertain date, Roman to Post Medieval, about AD 43 - 1900. It has a square base, slightly hollow where the lead has shrunk as it cooled, four flat triangular faces and tapers to a point, making it a square pyramid. There are no markings nor any decoration. There is no evidence of a loop or hole for suspension. The object is 55.1mm long, the base is 25.7mm by 27.7mm and it weighs 161g. The condition of the metal suggests that a Post Medieval is most likely, as the corners are crisp and the metal is patinated but has little damage. However,…

Complete Medieval cast lead papal bulla of Pope Gregory IX, dating to the period AD1227-1241. The obverse of the bulla carries the uppercase legend GRE/GORIVS (pellet stop)/PP (pellet stop) VIIII (pellet stop), within a circular beaded border (PP probably stands for 'Pastor Pastorum' - 'Shepherd of Shepherds' or Papa Patria - 'priest of Rome'). The PP part of the inscription is surmounted by a symbol that looks similar to a flattened Greek omega. The reverse has the heads of St. Peter (right) and St. Paul (left), both of whom face inwards, each is surrounded by a sub-oval pelleted inn…

A trapezoid weight. The weight is made of lead. At the apex is a small perforation which would have been used to suspend the weight. Given the flat base, the weight could have also been used freestanding. There is no decoration present on the weight. Lead weights are difficult to date and have remained relatively unchanged through from the Roman to Post Medieval period. This likely is either a steelyard or free-standing weight.

Lead weight, as kindly suggested by the finder. Cast discoid concavo-convex object with a moulded double-barred cross standing in bold relief on its concave side; the motif might be taken as a merchant’s mark, a cross, or - just possibly - the schematic rendition of a ship with a mast. Patinated. Discoid weights of this mass are dated to the medieval period in London, though they do not apparently respect any of the systems of measurement thought to have been in use at the time. Suggested date: Medieval, 1150-1350 Diameter: 40.2mm, Thickness: 7.2mm, Weight: 73.85gms

A complete lead medieval ampulla dating to c. AD 1300-1500. The object is hollow-cast in the form of a bag-shaped vessel with a slightly flared neck and opposed D-shaped handles set where the neck meets a slightly bulbous body. One side bears longitudinal fluting which is carried up across both body and neck, and which evokes the cockleshell sign of St James. The other side bears a letter R within a plain rounded panel with a double linear border. Above the letter is a possible Annunciation lily-pot or ragged staff. The ampulla has not been torn open and is complete. Height:…

Crude lead alloy conical weight. Round in cross section tapering to a blunt rounded apex. There is no evidence of loops or a hole for suspension and it is therefore probably a traders standing weight. Lead has been used to provide mass and weight for centuries and without archaeological context or any stylistic evidence only a very broad date range can be given. Weight is 205g or 7.23 ounces. Circa AD43-1750.

Post-Medieval lead-alloy probably half-ounce avoirdupois trade weight. Discoidal-shaped standing weight with a raised border around the top face. The central field is stamped with an incuse R or possibly IR with the very faint vestige of a surmounting crown. IR with a surmounting crown would suggest James I of England. The reverse does have a deliberate design on it as a series of radial lines can be discerned, but unfortunately the overall design scheme is too worn to resolve. The weight at 0.469 ounces avoirdupois or 1.33g suggests it was originally a half-ounce w…

Post-Medieval lead-alloy pierced weight. Circular frustrum-shaped standing weight with an incuse stamped cipher on the top face. The cipher comprises a KIngs crown uppermost but the remainder of the stamp is obscured by a full-thickness 2mm sub-circular hole. The weight at 0.68 ounces or 19.4g even allowing for losses, is inconclusive of a weight unit or subdivision; - it could however be the lead plug from a larger weight. Crown ciphers were in common use from the 16th-18th C and this weight probably dates from within this span.

A complete lead standing weight of unknown date, Roman to Post Medieval, c. AD 43-1800. It is very crudely cast, being approximately conical with a large hole running from top to an increasing diameter at its base. Measurements: weight 75.6 grams, height 24.9mm, diameter of base (max) 27.9mm Weights of this type are ubiquitous and very difficult to date from undated contexts and were used from the Roman period through to the Post Medieval period where they had various functions such as fishing or trade weights.

A complete cast lead figurine of an animal, possibly a tiger probably dating to the Post Medieval period c. AD 1500-1800. The figurine is crudely formed, possibly by hand, and appears to be dancing. A lead / lead alloy weight dating to the medieval to post medieval period (c.AD 1350-1700) The object is conical in form with a flat base. At the top of the apex is the remains of an iron suspension loop, represented only by orange staining. The surface of the weight is rough and battered seemingly as a result of the post depositional processes such as being hit by the plough. A hole perforates the weight at an angle and narrows from one side to the other. It is unclear if this is an intentional channel or accidental. The weight has a white / light grey coloured surface.
