Copper alloy korte (or courte) of Philip II, King of Spain (1556-1598), from the Spanish Netherlands, dating from 1555 to 1581, when the Dutch Republic was established, general type Van Gelder & Hoc 229. Most likely minted at Brabant, Antwerp, which appears to be the only variety that can have the ANG reading (as opposed to AN, which also is on one of the Flanders issues); if so, the reference is Van Gelder & Hoc, 1960, no.229-1. The 'scrolled crowns' on the reverse are referred to as 'briquettes', which in modern French means cigarette lighter, but the contemporary meaning was probab…

This narrow shield shape is similar to that engraved in the stone mould (no.5) from Tremough, Cornwall, illustrated in Jones, Gossip & Quinnell, 2015, on page 95, fig.5.13, which is thought to have produced a slender socketed axe, but with a shield pattern mo…

Medieval cast copper alloy mount in the shape of a seated female figure holding up a small animal, probably St Agnes with a lamb. The mount is cast in thick relief with a convex front and back which is mostly flat but concave under the thicker areas. The female figure sits on a cushion or low bench with knees bent; one end of the bench projects to the right and has three horizontal sections but other details are unclear. When the figure is straight the lower edge of the mount is angled; the position of the feet suggest this is original. The figure wears a long, relatively loose ove…
