Lead probable weight. Cast discoid weight with a plain cross or saltire moulded in bold relief on its upper surface. Dave Haldenby kindly considers this object to be of uncertain date due to this atypical decoration, which might rather be expected in an Anglo-Saxon or later Christian context. In the former, it might have represented an imprecise four mancus value - the mancus, a gold coin valued at 30 silver pennies, weighed 4.82gms. However, the use of a weight made of material which might readily be tampered with to check payments in gold seems unlikely, especially when its correspon…

An copper alloy object – possibly a weight, or coin- of probable Roman date.
The weight is sub-oval in plan, rectangular in cross section with a very worn design on one surface which includes two parallel lines. The opposite side is too worn to discern a design. The weight is a dark green colour and quite thick.

The weight was found near a number of Roman coins so may be dated to this period but is too thick relatvie to its diameter to be identified as a coin.
