Description: A silver Roman denarius that has been incorporated into a finger ring as the bezel. The hoop is rectangular in cross-section, flaring at the shoulders with a longitudinal groove along the centre of the outer face of each shoulder. The outer end of each shoulder has been soldered to the reverse of the denarius. The whole object including the coin then appears to have been coated with white metal. A recessed rectangular panel is visible to one side of the inner face of the rear of the hoop and possible lettering can be seen here, but this is almost entirely covered by a fold…

An incomplete Roman copper alloy penannular finger ring in the form of a coiled snake, dating from about AD 100-400. The hoop is sub-circular in plan and  rectangular in section. The terminal on the outside of the finger-ring tapers to a point and represents the tail of the snake. The other terminal is broken, but is expanded and probably would have formed the head of the snake. The ring has a small circular knob near the tail, and the ring is decorated with a series of moulded lines ranging from angled single ribs near the tail, to a herring-bone pattern near …

Probable Roman copper-alloy finger-ring of Henig Type IX / Guiraud Type 9. The hoop is a simple closed polygon with nine external facets and nine internal facets (nonagonal) of approximately equal length. It is radially thicker on one side, with one facet being the thickest of all. The facets on either side of this become progressively but marginally thinner until the four facets directly opposite the thickest one are reached. These last four are the thinnest facets, and appear to be equally so. On at least one face of the hoop (when viewed from the side, as you would view a coin…

A Medieval gold and gem seal matrix finger ring dating from AD 1200 - 1300, with a reused Roman intaglio set in the bezel, dating from 100 BC - AD 75. The ring has a large oval bezel, with the intaglio set in the centre, apparently flush with the surface. It is surrounded by a flat field of gold forming a border on which is engraved an inscription in lombardic lettering: "+ PENSE . DE MOY P:". This translates as 'Think of Me P' in Medieval French; presumably the P is the initial of the owner if the ring was used as a signet ring, or the giver if the ring was giv…

A cast copper-alloy asymmetrical probable finger ring of probable Roman to medieval date (c. AD 23-1400). The ring is tear-shaped in cross section with the point of maximum diameter being from the top where the tear drop shape begins to the centre of the round section at the base of the tear. However, this does not correspond to the minimum thickness, which is shown when the ring is turned to the right, thus creating a square…

Large and heavy Roman gold finger ring of ‘keeled’ type with a wide openwork hoop and large ovoid bezel set with a dark blue/light grey oval nicolo intaglio. The lower part of the hoop is composed of a pair of six-sided polygons, each with a central rib and openwork panels on each side that slope downwards from the rib. The openwork consists of peltas, four in total, rather crudely executed. The polygons are not quite the same in style; where they meet they form a six-pointed star, with the angles left plain and unworked on one side but with the others indented to form a pa…
