An incomplete copper alloy brooch, probably a Weetch (2014) Type 2a nummular brooch, of middle to late Early Medieval date (AD 700 - AD 1050). The brooch is more oval in form than circular. Within an outer frame is a classical looking male bust, but the surface is too worn to identify any further details. The back of the brooch is flat. At the top it has two clear projections (pin lugs) from a pin mounting. At the bottom there is at least one projection, probably the remains of the catch-plate. However, there is also a possible scar from a second projection which is now missing sp…

Two cut pieces of silver bar, consistent with Viking arm-rings of the late 9th and 10th centuries, possibly cut as hack-silver for use in a bullion economy. Item1 is slightly curved in plan and has a trapezoidal cross section. It has been cut both ends. The lower, largest edge has an incised line through the centre of the length, dividing the bar into two fields. The uppermost field has a very precisely drawn six-pointed star formed of three crossed lines. The precision of this symbol suggests a later, possibly modern date for this item, but both the section and the slight curve are c…

A cone shaped lead object, possibly a weight of Early Medieval date, AD 850 - 1066. It is a solid and cone shaped, with a rounded apex and a slightly concave base. There are no markings or decoration. The surface is very smooth and the corners are crisp, whch may suggest a more modern date. Measurements are; length 14.3mm, maximum diameter (base) 19.1mm and weight 24.0g. Compare LVPL-24A1AA. At Torksey (Lincs), the Viking camp/settlement, solid lead pieces were classed as weights. The mass corresponds with the Viking eyrir of 24g, or Viking ounce (ore) of 24 - 26g. (SE Kruse, 1988, &q…

Copper alloy probable ingot fragment. A cast billet, hammered flat, probably by one robust blow. This is a member of a seldom-reported – though probably more often encountered - class of pelloidal base metal ingots, typically with a dark or black surface, sometimes in a small bun or an oval-ended form resembling a guinea-pig turd. These presumably fall later than the later Roman use of base metal coins, but might have represented multiple values of these in later periods reliant upon transactions in metal bullion. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 410-1066 Length: 12.1mm, Width: …

Lead strap end. A cast rectangular plate with a split inner end where a pair of lead rivets of diameter 3.4mm and length 5.8mm pass through both leaves of the plate, being burred behind. The riveted end is divided from the rest of the plate by a beaded border which encloses a symmetrical figurative motif. The scene resembles a pair of draped Victories facing each other with a tall trophy between them, and, if this reading is sustained, it must be drawn from a later Roman coin. The back is entirely plain. Despite its straight outer end, this object presumably derives from Thomas's clas…

Early-medieval A-bracteate. A disc of beaten gold bearing a low-relief design within a stamped border, and retaining a finely billeted rim, now detached at 3 o'clock and broken at 12 o'clock relative to the design. The object also bears a ragged transverse tear extending from 10 o'clock. The central design is obviously derived from the profile diademed imperial bust appearing on late Roman coinage, though with significant adaptations which are deliberately chosen, rather than simple misconstructions of the design. A first departure from the Roman model is th…
