A cast copper alloy fragment, possibly the grip and pommel from a small toy sword or ornamental paperknife of probable 19h century date. The object is 35.5mm in length, with an ovate grip decorated with closely spaced transverse ridges. The pommel is biconical with six facets to each side and a small terminal knop. The other end has broken away, but traces of rusted iron suggest that there would have been an iron blade attached.

The copper alloy sheet used for it is 4.83mm thick, and it stands at a height of 15.08mm. On the bottom, there is a perforation in the centre of the object which has an internal diameter of 14.97mm. There appears to be some form of raised rim around the perforation, although it is worn and there are signs of breakage along it. The main body curves upward, and there are two d-shaped lugs along the length of the object that curve sharply upward. The…

A fragment of an Early Medieval to Meddieval copper-alloy head from a cross-staff dating to circa AD 1000-1100. Only a small section of one face survives. This has an openwork lattice-like design formed from two adjoining open lozenge-shapes with parts of a further two connected to one side. Small pellets protrude from the outer face where the corners of each lozenge meet. The outer face is slightly convex and the reverse concave confirming that it would probably have been globular in shape originally. A number of similar examples have now been recorded on the PAS database inclu…
