Incomplete cast copper-alloy tool for incising lines on Roman tiles also referred to as a tile comb.
The find consists of the lower part of the handle and the comb. In plan the tile comb resembles an inverted T. The handle part of the tool is a rounded hexagon in section which bulges outwards along its upper third and flattens out along its lower third as it becomes the T-bar comb section. The top of the handle section tapers inwards and is then surmounted by a rounded band. This band is hollow and probably once held a wooden handle extension. The T-bar section is flat and the b…

A copper alloy possible pastry jigger handle. The object is a flat rectangular sectioned bar, broken at one end and with a flared triangular terminal at the other. The terminal has seven grooves on one face, but the other face is flat. This could be the end of a pastry jigger, but other examples seem to have grooves on both faces producing a zig zag section rather than the section shaped like a row of triangles on this example. Probably post medieval in date, and most likely dating from the 18th century. Measures 30.6mm long, 24.8mm wide and 2.6mm thick.

The terminal from a modern, 18th to 19th century pastry jigger. The object is missing its functional cutting end, and only the top end survives. The object is 'T' shaped and terminates in a 'crimped' zig zag, presumably to be used in decorating the pastry. Beneath the terminal there is a double collared knop and then a circular shaft. These objects are often confused with Roman tile combs. The object measures 50.21 mm long, 35.25 mm wide at the 'T'shaped end, and has a shaft that is 4.9 mm thick. It weighs 14.6 grams. It has a smooth dark green patina.

A copper alloy unidentified object of uncertain date. The object has a rectangular sectioned 'tang' at one end, and opens out into a sub rectangular wider and thinner area at the other. It is not clear whether the end is original or a break, but is possibly has slight teeth or a patterned edge, like a pastry jigger. The wider area is slightly convex and curved, making the reverse slightly hollow. There is a slight step between the 'tang' and the 'paddle' like area. The end of the square sectioned part is an old break. This object has some similarities with Roman styli, but the square …

A cast copper alloy potters tool, possibly a tile comb. The object is T-shaped in plan, has a handle with a circular cross-section which develops into a narrowed square frame that may have been the tang for insertion into a wooden or bone handle. The head of the object has a continual wavy line moulded in high relief. Similar objects have been recorded in the literature (e.g. de la Bedoyere 1989, 59; ref. 34b) and also on this database although there is an ongoing debate as to whether isolated examples are indeed Roman tile-combs; many may well be post-medeival pastry jiggers. …

A cast copper alloy cutting wheel from a post-medieval pastry jigger (c. late 17th -19th Century). Both faces are slightly convex. It has radiating grooves and ridges on both sides forming a zig-zag profile at the circumference for cutting. It is pierced centrally for an axis bar which would have been secured to a handle. The central hole is encrusted with rust indicating the axis bar would have been made of iron. The object is brown in colour 25.3mm in diameter, 3.4mm thick and weighs 6.24g

A cast lead alloy unifaced disc with a series of cast holes; in plan the disc represents a relatively crude wheel. The date of the artefact is unknown, however from the casting techniques a later medieval - modern date is suggested (1350 - 1800). The front face is decorated with a cast design; this consists of a central raised boss from which eight irregular spokes extend conjoining with the outer rim of the disc. Each rib is decorated with a series of raised pellets; at the junction between the spoke and rim is an annulet or a solid pellet, the space between these is filled with salt…

A copper alloy pastry jigger dating from the Post Medieval period which is 84mm long, 29mm wide and 5mm thick. It has a square sectioned stem with a broken loop at one end which is in the same plane as the stem. At the other end the stem becomes thinner and then flares sideways into a cross bar. Only one half of this survives but the break is worn and patinated. The back of the bar is concave and has a small pointed projection at the outer edge. The front is crimped with the indentations alternately from one side and then the other to leave a wiggly line along the edge. This object is…

A cast copper alloy probable tile comb. In plan the comb has a vertical arm which is the handle and a cross bar at the base which has the teeth for the comb. The handle is sub-rectangular in section with rounded corners and is of varying widths which swells towards the upper edge. In plan the handle is slightly curved to one side and this is probably not intentional, but may have occurred during use. The upper edge is broken, and it does not appear to be broken recently. Below the break there is moulded decoration with three transverse ribs. The opposite terminal has an integral cross …

A copper alloy forked fitting which is 39.9mm long, 18.7mm wide and 12.3mm thick. It consists of two D shaped bars forming a forked fitting with a large sub-spherical knop which sits above area where the bars are joined. There is a circular rivet hole in the far end of each bar, so it is presumed that another element was held between the forks, with a wheel on a spindle, or a thin hinged element. The object has a crumbly red, green and brown patina which suggests a post medieval date. It is decorated with a forked raised bar across the rivet end of each arm of the fork, and another ra…

A copper alloy pastry jigger dating from the post medieval period. Only the forked attachment and the wheel survive, with the handle missing. The surviving part is 49.2mm long, 34.5mm wide and 9.2mm thick. The wheel is openwork with four radiating struts. The teeth are arranged in groups of three which is a slightly unusual feature. There is a patchy black coating which can often suggest a seventeenth century date. Similar examples can be seen in Bailey's "Detector Finds", page 96 dated from the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries.

Incomplete post medieval copper alloy pastry jigger consiting of part of the central shaft and the cross bar forming the head. The shaft is is circular in cross-section at the apex and sub-triangular in cross-section where it joins the head. It swells gradually away from the head, reaching its maximum diameter at a point just below the apex. The head is flat. The upper edge of the head curves upwards, then downwards to either side of the shaft, creating a symmetrical, wavy effect. The extant working end consists of a 'T'-shaped head that would have been used for cutting and impressing…
