A probable copper alloy pastry jigger dating from the post medieval period, about AD 1600 - 1800. Only part of the forked attachment at each end, and the handle survives, with the wheels missing. The handle is oval in section and is divided into sections by collars and bulbous mouldings.  The arms are broken off and missing, but the top of the box for the wheel survives. There appears to have been a box and wheel at each end. Similar examples can be seen in Bailey's "Detector Finds", page 96, dated from the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries. Compare&…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Bradford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete, copper-alloy object, possibly a fragment of a pair of Post Medieval nutcrackers dating from AD 1750 - 1800. The object is a short ength of a solid cylindrical rod, moulded with a reel and collar motif. There is an old break at one end, and at the other is a transverse element of triangular cross-section. This is suggested to be the end of the grip for holding and crushing the nut. The length is 22.3mm, width 12.7mm, thickness 8.0mm and the weight is 7.37g. The metal has a grey green patina.  Compare HAMP-44A004 for a complete set of nutcrackers of similar…

A solid copper alloy artefact, probably part of a tap handle of post-Medieval to Modern date, about AD 1800 - 1950. It is sub-cylindrical with one rounded end and a narrowed waist. There is a circumferential groove round the terminal of the rounded end. The other end is damaged, but is mainly slightly concave and has three, closely spaced, triangular ridges in the centre. These may be part of a screw thread. The edge of the flat end is broken. It is 45.2mm long and 15.2mm in diameter at the widest point. It weighs 45.04g. It is likely that another matching part of t…

An incomplete copper alloy Pastry Jigger of Post-Medieval to Modern date (AD 1700-1900). The object is roughly triangular in shape and widens and flattens into the zig-zag working edge of the jigger. The shoulders of the head are slightly curved. The junction between the shaft (which is missing) and head is decorated with three narrow transverse collars.. The tooled edge has a series of incised V shaped notches from both faces running the length of the head. This would have been for cutting and pressing the pastry. A copper alloy miniture wheel, possibly a votive model dating from the Late Bronze Age to Early Roman period, but it could also be a Post Medieval pastry jigger or component from a Post Medieval to Modern toy. The object is an openwork circular disc with four spokes and a central lozenge shaped hub, perforated by a sub-square hole. The hub and spokes are square in cross-section. The spokes narrower in the middle and flare towards the ends in plan. The rim of the "wheel" is wider than the spokes, and is bevelled on both faces, so the outer edge is pointed, making a triangle in cross…

A lead alloy object, possibly a weight, toy or maybe metal working debris. The object is an irregular disc which is fairly flat on both faces and has damaged edges. There are faint traces of incised lines on the edge which may have been a zigzag like a pastry jigger. Thee are deep scratches and damage on both faces. Near the centre of each face is a deep hole but they do not appear to join to perforate the plate. However, the object could have rotated on prongs resting in the hole and may be a wheel from a toy. The metal has a rough white patina. It is 27.8mm long, 25mm wide and 5.1mm…

A cast copper alloy unidentified object of probable Post Medieval date, with a thick shaft, and a hooked anchor-shaped zoomorphic terminal. The zoomorphic element appears to be of two bird, serpent or animal heads with a crest or mane on the back of the neck. An openwork triangle separates the two zoomorphic ends, formed from a rectangular sections bar joining the apes of the two beasts' necks. There are incised lines on the necks representing fur or feathers. The necks of the creatures come together in the central shaft which is D shaped in section. The end looks to have been cut - i…

A copper alloy pastry jigger dating from the Post Medieval period. Only the terminal survives. It has a rectangular sectioned stem which flares sideways into a cross bar. The back of the bar is concave and has a trifoliate projection at the outer edge at each end. The front is crimped with the indentations alternately from one side and then the other to leave a wiggly line along the edge. A copper alloy unidentified object of uncertain date. The object has a rectangular sectioned 'tang' at one end, and opens out into a sub rectangular wider and thinner area at the other. It is not clear whether the end is original or a break, but is possibly has slight teeth or a patterned edge, like a pastry jigger. The wider area is slightly convex and curved, making the reverse slightly hollow. There is a slight step between the 'tang' and the 'paddle' like area. The end of the square sectioned part is an old break. This object has some similarities with Roman styli, but the square …

A copper alloy possible pastry jigger handle. The object is a flat rectangular sectioned bar, broken at one end and with a flared triangular terminal at the other. The terminal has seven grooves on one face, but the other face is flat. This could be the end of a pastry jigger, but other examples seem to have grooves on both faces producing a zig zag section rather than the section shaped like a row of triangles on this example. Probably post medieval in date, and most likely dating from the 18th century. Measures 30.6mm long, 24.8mm wide and 2.6mm thick.

A copper alloy pastry jigger dating from the post medieval period. Only the forked attachment and the wheel survive, with the handle missing. The surviving part is 49.2mm long, 34.5mm wide and 9.2mm thick. The wheel is openwork with four radiating struts. The teeth are arranged in groups of three which is a slightly unusual feature. There is a patchy black coating which can often suggest a seventeenth century date. Similar examples can be seen in Bailey's "Detector Finds", page 96 dated from the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries.

A copper alloy forked fitting which is 39.9mm long, 18.7mm wide and 12.3mm thick. It consists of two D shaped bars forming a forked fitting with a large sub-spherical knop which sits above area where the bars are joined. There is a circular rivet hole in the far end of each bar, so it is presumed that another element was held between the forks, with a wheel on a spindle, or a thin hinged element. The object has a crumbly red, green and brown patina which suggests a post medieval date. It is decorated with a forked raised bar across the rivet end of each arm of the fork, and another ra…

A copper alloy pastry jigger dating from the Post Medieval period which is 84mm long, 29mm wide and 5mm thick. It has a square sectioned stem with a broken loop at one end which is in the same plane as the stem. At the other end the stem becomes thinner and then flares sideways into a cross bar. Only one half of this survives but the break is worn and patinated. The back of the bar is concave and has a small pointed projection at the outer edge.
