An incomplete post medieval copper alloy stirrup dating to c AD 1500-1550. The fragment comprises part of the cover plate of the boxx of a stirrup and is in the form of a scallop shell. All that remains is a section of the stirrup side which is trapezoid in cross section and which broadens gradually to the scallop shell. The scallop shell is subcircular and shaped at the bottom with six diagonal lines angled towards the centre bottom. Compare with a larger example from Norwich Cathedral refectory (J. Clark in H. Wallis (2006) EAA 116, p.50, fig. 33 no. 492). See NMS-18F7F6. The o…

A damaged copper-alloy object, probably representing a stirrup loop of post-Medieval to modern date. The D-shaped loop has been formed from two wires which are close together at the flat base of the loop and diverge towards the damaged apex. Copper-alloy sheet has been wrapped around these wires throughout most of the stirrup loop, but there is a gap at the apex, where the wires protrude.

Copper alloy stirrup. Stirrup with an open oval footrest 65mm wide whose sides (11mm by 5mm) and medial reinforcing bar (10mm by 6mm) are of rectangular section. The reinforcing bar was let into rectangular slots at either end of the oval loop of the footrest, a detail only apparent when it is viewed from below. Above this, stirrup sides of round section, probably brazed to the footrest, form a broad loop. The top of this loop was beaten flat and an oval ended slot punched through the thinner metal here to retain the stirrup leathers; part of the lower side of this aperture is now los…

An Iron stirrup of uncertain date, likely to be Post Medieval, c. 17th to 19th century. The top of the stirrup is rounded with two irregular perforations in the centre, through which the strap would probably have been suspended. Below the loop, the sides are straight and diverge and widen towards the base, with a maximum width of 7.8mm. The sides are rectangular in section. The flat base has a wider section, mostly made up of iron concretion. These is an impression of binding within these concretion, possibly suggestion they cover an addition to the foot of the stirrup, held on with …
