An incomplete, copper alloy object of unknown date, potentially part of a stirrup terminal of early Medieval date (c. AD 1000-1100). The object is irregularly shaped. It starts at the top as more trapezoidal in plan, expanding from 15.34mm wide to 19.29mm over a distance of c. 14.25mm. Beneath this it narrows to 17.20mm and gradually expands to 18.81mm over a distance of c. 10.75mm. At this point, it becomes more semi-circular in plan, with the left edge arching to the left before returning towards the right in an irregular manner, creating two seemingly rounded projections near the b…

An Iron stirrup of uncertain date, likely to be Post Medieval, c. 17th to 19th century. The top of the stirrup is rounded with two irregular perforations in the centre, through which the strap would probably have been suspended. Below the loop, the sides are straight and diverge and widen towards the base, with a maximum width of 7.8mm. The sides are rectangular in section. The flat base has a wider section, mostly made up of iron concretion. These is an impression of binding within these concretion, possibly suggestion they cover an addition to the foot of the stirrup, held on with …

A copper alloy fragment, probably from a medieval stirrup. The fragment consists of a sub-rectangular plate, broken at one side, with an arm projecting downwards and slightly outwards attached to the rear of the complete side. The arm projects 23mm below the plate, where it is broken. The front of the plate has an openwork design consisting of a rectangle below a circle towards the complete side of the plate. The breakage of the plate has occurred on a repeat of this design. Between the two openwork designs is a raised linear feature decorated with cross hatched incised lines. Th…

Cast copper alloy part of a later Medieval stirrup. It has broken into two pieces. Both of the two side arms are present and appear complete as they end in slightly rounded terminals. They have a sub-rectangular cross-section and narrow slightly towards the ends. The suspension loop, although broken, is complete and forms a rectangular shape. One side consists of a solid rectangle, the other side (that which has broken) is an openwork design. The design is three vertical rectangular perforations leaving four bars. The terminals of these bars extends above the main line giving a …

A copper alloy stirrup fragment. It measures 68mm long and 40mm high. In its complete form, this style of stirrup has a shell-shaped cover plate guarding the strap attachment and a broad, flat footrest formed of four curved and twisted bars. It seems to have been introduced towards the end of the fifteenth century in response to changes in foot-armour. The use of copper alloy is unusual as medieval stirrups are usually made of iron, though medieval craftsmen tended to follow the same patterns regardless of the material being used. Only ten or so copper alloy examples have been found a…

This dark surface has been scratched through to reveal the coppery colour beneath, for decoration. Medieval iron stirrup. It is complete, and covered in relatively compact corrosion so that the edges of the artefact have retained their shape. It measures 140mmlong 38mm wide and 161mm high and weighs 233.58g. At the top of the stirrup is a rectangular plate (56x33mm) masking the attachment loop. It may have been decorated and the bottom edge has two evenly spaced indentations suggesting a scalloped edge, but the corrosion means this is difficult to confirm. Iron possible stirrup fragment. Wrought iron bar, now of rectilinear section though this might arise from corrosion, with a narrowed upper end and thickened towards a sharply kinked end. The configuration matches that presented for later medieval stirrups from London, which would have been of triangular form with a top loop for the leathers (Clarke 1995, fig.55 no. 83). Suggested date: Late Medieval, 1350-1500. Length: 84.8mm, Width: 8.8mm, Thickness: 7.6mm, Weight: 17.94gms.

Iron possible stirrup. Wrought iron triangular frame, of probably rectangular section. The object is not broadened at the putative foot rest, which together with the light construction must introduce som doubt as to its identification. A D-section bar projecting from the apex of the triangle may represent a loop, though this has been opened, broken or subjected to considerable force to lie as it does now, oriented downwards. Suggested date: possibly Medieval, 1250-1400. Height: 95mm, Width: 115mm, Thickness: 6mm, Weight: 52.22gms.
