Object type: LUNULA
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cumbria

The lunula terminal is complete yet somewhat bent, the only break showing where it broke off of the main part of the broad, crescent-shaped collar. The terminal weighs 6.86g and has the dimensions of 47.48x25.97x0.63mm. No surface metal analysis was carried out but the precious metal content (gold) will be more than 10%. The lunula terminal was found whilst out metal-detecting on farmland near Brampton, Cumbria. The terminal (or 'horn') consists of a flat part which is shaped like the bowl of a spoon which is connected by a short 'stalk' to an elongated part with flat-rectangul…

The lunula is in two parts and nearly complete, only missing one of the circular terminals. The object is made of gold and so the precious metal content is more than 10%. The lunula is semi-circular in plan although both parts have been folded. There is one part which does not have a terminal and it is this section which is less folded making the semi-circular shape more obvious. The widest section of the lunula is where the two pieces have broken apart and then the object tapers towards the terminals. The section which still has a circular terminal is more severely folded and ther…

On the larger piece, the surviving expanded terminal is sub-angular with rounded corners and a pronounced mid-rib. It is set at right angles to the plane of the body. The body of the crescent is wide and tapers to the remaining terminal. The central body is undecorated apart a triple stranded framing b…

The terminal (or ‘horn’) from a lunula, dating to the Early Bronze Age (c.2400-2000BC). Description: The spatulate terminal is broadly ‘spade’ shaped; the upper left side of the spade has been folded almost back upon itself, the upper right is also folded at a 90° angle, and the lower right edge is also slightly bent. At the base of the spade is a stem that tapers (to a diameter of 2.2mm) and rotates (relative to the remainder of the collar) before broadening to a maximum width of 10.5mm at the break. Both the upper and lower tips of the break are bent, giv…
