Object type: PIN
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation ![]()
A fragment of cast copper alloy hair or dress pin of Roman date (AD 43-410).
This pin has a bi-conical head and a simply decorated, circular sectioned shaft. The remaining shaft is decorated with a series of evenly-spaced lines around the circumference of the shaft; the head is undecorated. There are traces of gilding at various points around the shaft.
The break of the shaft is not modern and there is no collar between the pin head and the shaft, which suggests a Roman, rather than Early Medieval date.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation ![]()
Post Medieval copper alloy possible mount, c.AD 1800-1900.
This object is made from a single sheet of metal with a wide bezel, oval centrepiece, and stamped floral decoration. The stamped metal has left a reverse of these designs on the inner face, which would be uncomfortable if worn and therefore makes it unlikely to be a finger ring. One side of the bezel has broken off in the past, while the other ends in a long, thin tang of metal that may have held this object to a larger piece of furniture.
