Silver bodkin fragment, as kindly identified by the finder. Cast rectangular-section pin fragment, broken across a longitudinal slot at one end, and also broken at the other end. Worn traces of finely incised diagonal lines appear on one side. Bent twice. These objects were used as hair or head-dress pins. In view of its material and date this object is to be submitted to the Treasure process, Ref. 2022 T762. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1650. Length: 37.1mm, Width: 3.2mm, Thickness: 1.3mm, Weight: 1.81gms

An incomplete silver Roman hair pin, only the head and short length of the shaft survive. This fragment weights 3.24g, and has an incomplete length of 21.7mm. A rectangular plinth, that accounts for 2.8mm of the length, separates the pin shaft from the rest of the pin head. The plinth measures 7.4mm width x 6.1mm thickness and is decorated by a groove running around all sides, set at the mid point on the length axis, that creates the appearance of two thin plinths one hovering above the other. The mouldings on the head comprise three constrictions dividing four elements, a round-topped terminal, a collar, a long swelling of sub-rectangular cross-section and another collar. A complete but bent silver bodkin dating from AD 1600 - 1700. It is inscribed with the initials E W in upper care, Roman style, seriffed letters positioned about half way along. The bodkin has a pear shaped scoop at one end. The narrow end extends from the narrow end of a drop shaped terminal which has a drop shaped hole through it. An incomplete copper alloy hair pin, likely Early Medieval in date (c. AD 650-850). The head of the pin is polyhedral, having thirteen undecorated facets. The top facet is square, with triangular facets from each corner. There are then another four square faces with four triangular faces near the bottom, connecting to the shaft of the pin. The head of the pin is 4.97mm wide and 6.32mm long. There is a raised disc of diameter 2.64mm located 0.27mm along the shaft, after which the shaft is 1.75mm in diameter.

Parallels are known from the continent from Spain to Bulgaria with a particular prevalence in Germany, but finds of these have not been observed in Britain. An incomplete cast copper-alloy hair pin, 32.9mm in length, with a teardrop shaped head decorated with cross hatched lines, probably in representation of a pinecone. below this is a ridged collar, a narrow waisted section and then a broader cylindrical collar, 5mm in diameter, which tapers slightly and appears to also be decorated with incised cross hatching. The pin shaft below this has a circular cross section and ends in a bend and break. Cf. Cool's (1990) Group 5 and most likely dating to the 2nd century AD. See HAMP-42B4E2 for a similar example.
