Lead alloy and iron unidentified object fragment. Cast concavo-convex cone with a smooth external surface on one side and hair over the frontlet represented on the other, bearing the stubs of a pair of asymmetrical branching antlers with texture conferred by lines of moulded dots along their beams. An iron fixing pin projects within the concave base and its rusted head appears above the frontlet. A number of similar objects have been reported from the region (e.g. NLM-C8AF8B) and they may derive from table or other ornaments with a venereal [i.e. associated with hunting] theme. Th…

An incomplete copper alloy object of uncertain function and dating, possibly Roman to Post Medieval (AD 43 to AD 1800). The object is irregularly shaped, with a bulbous end and a narrow end. Patinated post-depositional damage has affected most surfaces. It measures 20.7 mm in length, 7.3 mm maximum width, and 2.2 mm thick. It weighs 1.5 g. The object is a mid green colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement while within the plough soil, has resulted in the loss of the majority of the original surface. This object may be part of a Roman hair pin or brooch but …

A copper-alloy unidentified object, possibly a bell, mount or brooch, with anthropomorphic decoration, of possible post-mediaeval date (c. 1500-1900 AD). 24.5g in weight, 38.6mm long, 37.1mm wide, and 2.2mm thick. The object is highly decorative and domed in shape. The incised decoration appears to make a face. There is a hole approximately one-third from the bottom of the face, making a gaping mouth. above the hole is a flat surface that appears to be a nose but is damaged. Above and either side of the nose are two circles forming eyes. Above each eye is a squat, thick crescent…

A probable Post Medieval copper alloy pin. The object comprises a circular sectioned shaft which measures 55.6 mm in length and 2.9 mm in thickness. The end of the shaft has a rounded end. It has a globular head which has a diameter of 16.2 mm. The full length of the object is 68.8 mm. The object weighs 16.7 grams which could suggest lead solder or similar as seen on an example discovered in Somerset (SOM-DEB3EA). The object has a dark green/brown coloured patina. There are three vertical cracks in the globular head. Spherical-headed dress-pins were used by women to secure …

A cast copper-alloy finial of uncertain function or date. It measures 56.9mm in height, has a diameter of 29.2mm and weighs 92.0gms. By design it has a rounded knop at its top, 8mm in diameter. From this the metal slopes outwards and down to its point of maximum diameter, where three raised lines circle its circumference. Below this the body is convex, narrowing to its position on a short pedestal which has a base diameter of 14.5mm. A short stem 11.8mm in length extends downwards from this which has seven rings of screw thread around it. At its terminal end it is roughly square in cr…

A fragment of a copper alloy late-Medieval to early Post Medieval possible purse bar, dating to circa AD 1450-1550. The fragment consists of a small section of a side bar or arm and the globular terminal. One end terminates in an old break with a well-developed patina. The opposing end has a rounded knop. The fragment has a green coloured surface patina. The object is similar to purse bar terminals, it appears to large to be from a hair pin. It may also be a fitting for another object that is uncertain. The object measures 30.9 mm in length, 11.9 mm in width across the rou…

Lead unidentified object. A cast ball with deep curvilinear grooves wandering across its surface, and with a possibly drilled blind aperture of diameter 4mm sited between these grooves. The hollow was presumably where this object was attached to another. The metal retains a grey tint, suggesting a relatively recent date. The form resembles that of a massy head from a hair or hat pin, but the shallow socket would not assure its secure attachment. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1650-1900 Diameter: 13.7mm, Height (aligned with hole to base): 12.1mm, Weight: 11.17gms

A copper alloy unidentified object of uncertain date, Iron Age to Medieval. The object is baluster moulded terminal with a broken loop at one end. Adjacent to the loop is a thick beaded moulding of circular cross-section, then a groove, then a larger central beaded moulding, decorated with two shallow circumferential grooves which flank a convex central band. Another groove follows, then another bead matching the one by the loop. The end opposite the loop is hollow, with a cavity of circular section of 5mm diameter, extending at least 13mm into the centre of the object. A smooth olive…

An incomplete copper-alloy unidentified object, dating possibly to the Post-Medieval period. It is drop-shaped with a conical protrusion extending from the underside. The object is hollow and breaks in the tapering part. It has been probably cast in two pieces and then soldered along the short sides. Both wider faces are decorated with a recessed transverse oval which is divided in halves by a median transverse ridge; the two halves cointain two mirroring pelta-shaped elements. The tapering parts of the object are decorated with two hooked incised lines with a wider flute between them…

Copper alloy decorative terminal, possibly from a pin of Roman date The object is fragmentary, represented by the damaged terminal; a shaft fragment (with a surviving length of 33.4mm and a weight of 3.4g). The top of the terminal was conical (with a basal diameter of 7.0mm) and is heavily corroded, with a differential corrosion, beneath which the terminal is of faceted-globular form before a moulding above the top of the shaft. A heavily iron stained copper alloy unidentified object, possibly a brooch or fitting, possibly dating to the late Early-medieval period. The object is very unusual; the main body of the brooch is roughly circular in plan and is now encrusted with iron staining, but it was likely to have been formed of scrolled tendrils, interlaced, with openwork elements in between. On the reverse of the brooch are two integrally cast lugs set perpendicular to the brooch; it is assumed that a pin would have passed through these lugs to secure the brooch to the garment or possibly in the hair. The dec…

A copper alloy unidentified object of unknown date. The object consists of a thin metal rod with a sub-rectangular cross section. It is thicker at one end and uniformly tapers to a point at the other end, maintaining its rectangular section. This point appears not to be very sharp and it is possible that the tip has broken off. The object has a smooth, dark grey patina which is well developed. The broad end also seems to be a well worn and patinated break. There is some damage to the object; there is a crack all the way through the rod approximately 16mm from the pointed end. The obje…

Fragment of silver, probably from the head of a hair-pin and probably of Roman date. The fragment is rectangular in section and consists of a series of mouldings: at the top is a wedge shaped moulding and below three rectangular block mouldings which narrow to a sub-circular button. Below this there is a break, presumably where the shaft of the pin would have started. There is also a possible further break on the top end of the fragment.

A cast copper-alloy artefact in the form of a hand holding a small spherical object between thumb and forefinger, and emerging from a square pedestal cuff with a flared top and stepped base with double corded decoration. Unfortunately, the images provided (see notes, below) do not show the cross-section of the object. A concomitant description, however, states that the underside of the hole features a circular hole filled with lead. As this description goes on to state, attributing a usage to this object is problematic. Suggestions included a tripod and a key handle, although no par…
