An incomplete probably post-medieval dress or hair pin. Only the head and a fragment of the shaft survive, the remainder of the object is missing due to old breaks, now worn. It has a globular, spherical head which may be of shale, being bluish in colour and highly polished. It is otherwise without decoration but there are signs of gold colour on its surface. At the top of the head the shaft of the pin can be seen, flush with the surface of the head. It appears to be made of a different material from the head, being brown in colour and with signs of silvering. There is no collar. The …

Jet, Multi faceted cuboid head for a heir pin. The shaft of the hair pin has been truncated at the base of the head leaving only a circular platform. Similar examples have been at the Uley Shrine in Gloucestershire and was dated to the 3rd century (Woodward and Leach, 1993, 49, 168, 170). And Colchester which were dated to the late 3rd-4th (Crummy, 1983, 27-28) Length 9mm, width 9mm, thickness 8.6mm, weight 0.58g.

Head and part of shaft from a pin of Cool’s type 18, probably made from jet. The head is in the shape of a human head, roughly triangular in cross-section with a broad back to the head and a sharply pointed nose and chin. The chin is jutting, with a straight groove above for the mouth; a ridge above forms the upper lip, and above this is a short but prominent vertical ‘Roman’ nose.
