Gold possible brooch, of early-medieval (probable 5th-century) date.

Silver sheet, probably an equal-armed brooch or perhaps a mount.
The curved bow is flat-backed with raised edges on the front face and otherwise plain, straight sided except at either end where it flares sharply before originally wide triangular terminals at either end, three corners of which are missing, the fourth detached and held in place by a small piece of clear plastic tape. There are stamps consisting of two concentric rings arou…

Object type: JEWELLERY
Broad period: MODERN
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Published
Two wide, rectangular-sectioned ovoid loops, interlinked and affixed at one end by a truncated bar. Each loop is decorated with applied twisted gold wires forming a running lozenge pattern with loops at the borders, interspersed with tiny globular gold beads.
Of unknown function - perhaps part of an earring or decoration for a hair pin. Stylistically, however, it is consistent with late 19th century jewellery of archaising design.

Description: This remarkable piece is a double-sided seal matrix from a gold signet ring of Frankish type, diameter 12 mm, and with a gold content of approximately 98 per cent. It was designed to pivot on a pin which engaged with the shoulders of the ring itself, now lost. The bezel is engraved on one side with a long-haired frontal bust surmounted by a cross, with stylized drapery below; around this is a retrograde inscription in a mixture of capitals and lower case, which may be read as a female name, Baldehildis (Balthild). On the reverse is a scene with a male and a long-haired fe…

Object type: PIN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire

A probably hollow spherical headed pin dating from the Post Medieval period (probably 16th or 17th century) and made of gold. The head is 5.64mm in diameter. The pin head is decorated to imitate filigree and applied knop decoration has probably actually been incised or moulded. The design is a mixture of leaves, flowers, dots and rings. The pin shank is wire, circular in section and tapers to the point. It is curved along its length and there are regular notches in the wire.
The pin is similar to filigree and imitation filigree ball headed pins of the 16th century such as SWYOR-538…
