A fragment from a Roman hair pin. The shaft is truncated by a transverse break. This is circular in cross section and then at its top has moulded decoraton. This begins with four transverse raised collars each sepereated by a gouge, above this is then a pear shaper knop at thet of which is a smaller collar and projecting D-shaped knop. The pin is an orange brown colour. The pin is 27.3mm long, 6.4mm wide, and weighs 3.20 grams. There are several similar pins illustrated by Cool (1990: figs 2.13, 3.9, and 4.5).

A probable copper-alloy Roman hair pin or furniture nail - the shaft is corroded and incomplete and tapers to a point, with only a corroded head remaining. The head is globular in shape, with no visible collar. The surface is pitted and uneven. It is similar to examples seen in Crummy, 1989, pg 115, fig116 - globular, bun-shaped heads. An extremely corroded copper alloy object with a cylindrical terminal (4.9mm diameter) at one end of a constriction to an ovoid lobe which tapers to a bend and a point, probably an old break. The original surface is almost entirely lost and no decoration can be made out. Possibly a terminal from a hair pin of Roman date.

An incomplete late Roman to Early Medieval copper alloy pin, dating to AD 300-500. The pin head is biconvex with a central ridge running around the circumference of the head, creating two halves. The top half narrows to a rounded point in the centre of the head, and is conical in shape. The lower half extends downwards in a conical shape, and narrows to the integral shaft. This has a raised collar, and is sub circular in shape. The pin is very worn, and is a light red brown colour. It meaures 20.1mm in length, 10.8mm by 10.1mm across the head, and weighs 3.99g.

A copper alloy Roman hair-pin. It fits within Cool's Group 10 of knob headed pins. The heard is conical.  The shank is circular in section,  and thickened in its centre. The tip of the pin bent. It measures 60.2mm in length. The head is 6.2mm in diameter, and the pin weighs 4.45g. Cool, 1990, p.160, fig.7, no.1. This group would have been in use by c.AD 125 onwards.

A complete Iron Age copper alloy ring-headed hair pin of the ‘swan neck type’, dating circa 550 BC to 50 BC.
