A fragment from a Roman hair pin. The shaft is truncated by a transverse break. This is circular in cross section and then at its top has moulded decoraton. This begins with four transverse raised collars each sepereated by a gouge, above this is then a pear shaper knop at thet of which is a smaller collar and projecting D-shaped knop. The pin is an orange brown colour. The pin is 27.3mm long, 6.4mm wide, and weighs 3.20 grams. There are several similar pins illustrated by Cool (1990: figs 2.13, 3.9, and 4.5).

A veyr worn fragment from a cast copper-alloy dress or hair pin of Early-Medieval date, c.AD 700 - 900. The head is bi-conical or pear shaped having a point of maximum width that is offset closer to the the head than the shaft. It narrows from this point in a crinoline shape to become a circular cross section shaft. This is truncated by a transverse worn break. A fragment of a hair or hat pin of post-medieval date (c.AD 1500-1800). The object is made up of a globular head leading to a narrow neck with a single cordon below. Below this the object tapers and is broken, which is where the shaft would have been. The object has a largely brown patina and has developed a green patina on the top of the upper hemisphere. Similar examples can be found in Margeson (1993, fig. 5), dating to c.16th century. Dimensions: Length 8.1mm, Diameter 6.1mm, Weight 1.19g.

This has a ninety degree bend almost half way down the shank, with a slight curve at the end. The terminal end is rounded. The pin has a mid green patina, and measures 44.3mm in length, 13.2mm in diameter across the head, 2.9mm in thickness across the shank and 4.30g.
