Record ID: NLM-E82ED2
Object type: NET SINKER
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead. Barrel-shaped Net Sinker. This object, unusually, appears to have been cast - necessarily round a former - rather than being rolled from sheet lead. One end of the weight was then cut at an angle, the other tapers to a central hole of diameter: c.4.5mm. This seems to be a feature shared with some other weights from Winterton/Roxby, and may reflect the work of a particular bird-catcher or fisherman. These features also survive undamaged, so the weight was probably discarded along with the net. Length: 28.07mm, Width: 14.69mm, Thickness: 6.4mm, Weight: 36.16gms. Finder's reference…

Record ID: NLM-E81196
Object type: NET SINKER
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead Barrel-shaped Net Weight. Made from sheet, but damaged, perhaps from unclenching to remove from selvedge and probably in antiquity to judge from extent of patination on all visible surfaces. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 720-850 - on basis of similar objects stratified in Middle Saxon dumps of late 8th to early 9th-century date at Flixborough. Length: 33.98mm, Width: 15.48mm, Thickness (of sheet): 2.66mm, Weight: 19.71gms. Finder's reference: From his grot-box, but finder has only detected at club rallies at Roxby and Winterton

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire

Lead Barrel-shaped Net Weight. Made from thick sheet, which bears a cut edge at one end of object. Formerly rolled or clenched, but now prised open; both inner and outer surfaces are heavily patinated, so this probably reflects removal of the weight from selvedge of net in antiquity. Unlike some weights of this type, there appears to have been one rounded and one flat end, albeit this may arise fortuitously. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 720-850 - on basis of similar objects stratified in Middle Saxon dumps of late 8th to early 9th-century date at Flixborough. Length: 29.46mm, Width…
