A fragment of a lead-alloy mount of Post Medieval date, c. AD 1500-1700. The object consists of a sexfoil shaped flower on the left, and a horizonal S shape on the right. The flower has a moulded pellet at the centre and six curved petals. Some of the petals are missing their ends. To the right of the pellet where the seventh petal would be, instead is a curved piece of lead in the shape of a horizontal S. It has a moulded rib running through the centre of the shape and the sides sloped. It ends at a worn break. The edges of the S are decorated with a beaded border. The reverse i…

It has a rounded flattened knop on the top, and then it gradually expands with a couple of decorative grooved collars as it extends downwards. Two circular attachment holes are present, each on opposite sides. It has a diameter of 3.0 mm. The mount has a sub circular flat base with a grooved ring running around the outside. On the inside of the mount, it is concave, with traces of iron corrosion products. It measures 24.1 mm tall. It has a diameter of 6…

A probable Post Medieval copper alloy mount or brooch, dating to circa AD 1500-1700. The object is oval in form and has a convex upper surface and flat reverse. The decoration and form of the object are of a snake eating its own tail. The decoration on the front face and main body of the object are a series of incised cross hatching marks. There is a moulded pellet eye and V shaped notch cut out to form the mouth. The reverse is flat apart from one small section that is slightly raised and could suggest an attachment to allow the object to be mounted. The object has a dark brown to b…

A Post-Medieval mount or button, made of copper alloy. The object is circular in shape, is 33.59mm in diameter, with a rough edge. The object condition is fairly worn. It has a tear on the edge and is bent upwards. On this side, the outer edge is decorated with a petal design radiating from a faint, beaded circle in the centre. The surface is rough and mainly a dark brown/green, with evidence of silvering in the centre and orange rust along the tear. The other side is rough with a copper/green Verdigris patina. The object was possibly used as a harness mount or button, as there are…

An incomplete, cast lead alloy heraldic mount, possibly a harness fitting of Post-Medieval date (AD1600-1800). The mount is decorated with a fantastic beast, possibly a wyvern or dracontile. The overall size of the mount is uncertain as part of the mount is missing, having broken off. It is probable that the broken section would have depicted the tail of the beast. The reverse of the mount is plain, flat and undecorated. There is evidence of the use of at least one iron lug to secure the mount to a belt or harness. The mount measures 38.7mm in length, is 27mm high and 4.5mm t…

Medieval to Post Medieval (c. 1300 to 1550) possible mounts or window came: The possible mounts are both formed by crumpled and bent arms which taper. The outer face of the artefacts have moulded grooves which is probably decorative. The surface of the mount is slightly oxidised. The larger artefact measures 29.17mm long, 20.37mm wide, 7.86mm thick and weighs 7.35g. The function of the artefacts is not certain. From the same site a lead star mount has been found (WAW-D2FAD2) and dated to the 15th to mid 16th century. These artefacts are not obvious star shapes, and the surface cond…

Medieval to Post Medieval (c. 1400 to 1550) probable lead mount: The mount is in the form of a six-pointed star, although three arms are missing and these breaks are not recent. The remaining arms are wavy in plan, have a triangular section and co-join at a central pellet. The two complete arms are folded towards the reverse of the mount. The surface of the mount is oxidised. The mount measures 29.16mm long, 24.06mm wide, 7.93mm thick and weighs 8.12g. A similar example was excavated in London (Egan 2005, 69, No.309) from a c.AD1500-1550 context. Egan (ibid.) notes that others have…

A complete lead or lead alloy anthropomorphic (person like) probable mount, of uncertain dating but of probable Medieval to Post Medieval dating (AD 1400 to AD 1800). The mount is irregular in shape, and sub rectangular in section. The front exhibits a raised design that bears a resemblence to a person walking right, with legs separated, and arms held out and hands on waist at both the front and back. The head is pointing to the right. The areas between the legs and between the arms and the body are recessed. A circular perforation (hole) is present, located in the upper torso area…

Description: An incomplete circular gold setting, originally with a domed cloisonné garnet setting. The circular backplate is framed by a thin (0.4mm) outer and thicker (1.1mm) inner beaded wire. The thicker wire is carefully made with narrow even beads, but the thin wire has more oblique beads and many Aquätorschnitte, no doubt reflecting the difficulty of manufacturing such extremely fine beaded wire. Part of the narrower wire has broken away and survives loose. The central cloisonné setting has an outer upright strip which in side view is slightly bent over to retain the garn…

A cast lead mount in the form of a stylised dolphin, or possibly a fish. The dolphin has an arched back and a tail which loops back on itself to meet with the arched back. The object has a flat base with slight traces of solder, and this may have been a handle for some sort of vessel. Slight traces of black remain over parts of the mount.  It measures 52.24 mm long, 14.12 thick and 27.3 mm high. It weighs 88.2 grams. Two similar examples are recorded on the PAS database. One (NMS-23D975) is of copper-alloy, and has been identified as a drop handle from a Roman vessel. The other (LVP…

A copper alloy drop shaped mount, probably of post medieval date. On the front, slightly inset from the tapering edges of the mount, is a broadly flat raised design which follows the drop shaped outline. The rear of the mount is broadly flat with integral two pointed prongs orientated horizontally, one towards the top of the mount, and one towards the base. The prongs bend inwards. The mount has an incomplete dark green/black surface on both the front and reverse, and where this is not present, particularly towards the edge, a lighter green pitted surface is visible. The maximum di…

An incomplete cast copper alloy rivet which would have originally had separate rivets (length: 36.4mm; width: 16.3mm; thickness: 1.8mm; weight: 3.62g). At one end of this mount, there is an arrow-like terminal, compared to the rounded opposing end. In the centre, there are protruding side flanges. On the front of the mount, there are curved incised lines forming a leaf-like detail. Additionally, there are two empty rivet holes towards either end of the mount. This artefact is worn but in a fair condition with a dark green patina. Similar examples dating to the 16th century are il…

A cast lead lion's head (diameter: 35.9mm; thickness: 2.9mm; weight: 67.03g). All of the lion's facial features are clearly visible with round ringlets bearing incised lines to mark the mane around the face, two distinctly prominent curved eyebrows, two large annulet eyes as well as a large protruding nose (which makes the thickness of the artfact as wide as it is) with mouth underneath. There is slight iron corrosion on the nose and part of the mane. The back of the artefact is uneven but mostly flat with no decoration. There is a fair amount of iron corrosion on the back, possibl…
