An incomplete Medieval copper alloy cheek piece for a snaffle bit dating c.1066-1500. The cheek piece comprises a short bar which is circular in section and tapers to a knobbed terminal on one end, the other side thickening to a broken looped terminal. The remaining stubs have worn breaks. The object has a light green patina with possible iron corrosion near the knobbed end. Dimensions: length: 42.64mm, width: 16.31mm,  thickness: 8.38mm,  weight: 14.35g. This cheekpiece is part of a snaffle bit and falls within Ward Perkins (1967) type C, page 80;…

Copper alloy bridle fitting fragment, as kindly identified by Rob Webley, who corrects an initial identification and comments: 'Not sure I've seen a purse bar that works like this. I suspect it is a cheekpiece from a medieval bridle bit: https://finds.org.uk/counties/findsrecordingguides/cheekpieces/#Medievalnbspcheekpieces'. A robust fragment comprising a sub-rectangular section bar with a collared terminal knop of diameter 11.4mm, and an integrally cast loop of which about one third remains. The loop springs from an integrally cast block which is incised with …

An incomplete iron bridle cheekpiece dating to the medieval period (c. AD 1150-1450). The bit consists of a single shaft, with an integral central loop, and either side one terminal fanning out and the other terminal broken. The form of the bit is similar to one recognised by Ward Perkins (Museum of London 1940, 80-82 type B), as part of the 'snaffle'. This would have linked the bit to the headstall and reins by which the rider controls the horse (Clark et al, 1995). The metal has a reddish-brown colour. The bridle bit is 102.9mm long, 11.4mm wide and 6.2mm thick. The diamet…

A copper alloy incomplete cheekpiece from a bridle, probably of Medieval date. It is of Ward Perkins Type C, from a snaffle bit that is formed from a slightly curving rod that has a circular cross-section and globular terminals. In the centre is a truncated D-shaped or circular loop, of which only the base rem remains. Compare SWYOR-41C7C0; LANCUM-0FF9B7 and SUSS-BD3087.

A copper alloy incomplete cheekpiece from a bridle, probably of Medieval date, about AD 1066 - 1400, but possibly Post Medieval. It is of Ward Perkins Type C, from a snaffle bit. One sub-conical terminal survives, at the end of the bar of square section, and part of the central loop positioned next to the bar (which tapers where it forms the inside of the loop, perhaps through wear). The metal has a smooth blue green patina. It is 54.8mm long, 28.4mm wide and 8.9mm thick. 15.6g. The bar is 5.6mm by 6.2mm. See page 80 of the London Museum Medieval Catalogue. Compare LANCUM-0FF9B7 and S…

A copper-alloy medieval harness fitting; part of the cheekpiece from a snaffle type of bridle bit. It is a type classified as Ward Perkins' type D, with expanded bars. Only part of the cheekpiece survives; one of the expanded arms and part of the strap loop and strap bar. The bar, round which the mouth piece would have been fixed, is circular in section. The loop, to which the headstall and reins would have been attached, is a rounded square in section. The junction of the loop, bar and arm is mounlded with V shaped grooves in the angle. The arm flares away from the bar and loop. I…

A medieval cast copper-alloy cheekpiece from a bridle of Ward Perkins Type C (c. 14th century). The central element of the object is a D shaped ring. The loop of the D is formed by a circular sectioned bar, which widens at each end and terminates in a square piece of copper alloy. Between these square elements a thinner bar of copper alloy forms the straight back of the D. This part is slightly offset. Two further bars of copper alloy extend from either end of this straight side and are bent around towards the loop of the D, each terminating in a large knop. All these elements are cas…

Cast copper alloy terminal from a horse's cheek piece, circular in plan and clylindrical in profile, with one slightly more convex side, in keeping with Type E in Ward Perkins' typology (after London Museum, 1940, 80, Fig.19a) illustrated in Clark (2004), page 47, Fig.30, Type E, dated from the 14th to the 15th century. The terminal could also be from a dagger guard, like one illustrated in Williams (2001) "Finds from Surrey", Vol.88, p.328, Fig.13, No.121, dated to the 16th century. The terminal has been analysed, under a scanning electron microscope, by staff at the Camborne School …

A cast copper-alloy fragment, probably a knobbed terminal from a cheek-piece of a medieval horse's snaffle bit. An example illustrated in Clark (ed. 1995, 50; fig. 36) shows a Ward Perkins' type C cheek-piece with developed terminals, including knobs, similar to the present example. The fragment consists of the terminal and the broken end of the cylindrical arm. The arm survives over a length of up to 14.4mm. It has a diameter of 11.0mm and is slightly bent with regard to the terminal. The terminal itself is hemispherical in shape. It is 10.7mm in length and 15.4mm in diameter at the …
