Copper alloy mount. Cast plate bearing the three-dimensional concavo-convex openwork inmage of a proto-heraldic lion walking left with tail above its body and four ball-shaped paws. Like NLM-AF619C this falls short of the proto-heraldic form of those buckle plates ascribed to the early 13th century, though this is less at variance with their character than that object. A rivet of diameter 1.9mm and length 4mm was set in each corner of the frame. Suggested date: Medieval, 1175-1225 Length: 24.4mm, Height: 22.5mm, Thickness/Height (i.e. projection, clear of rivets): 8.4mm, Weight: 7.21gms

A copper alloy mount. It is basically triangular in shape, the narrow end being truncated, while the opposite face and the two sides are fluted. One side shows evidence of a slightly raised border along the edge. The mount has three studs on the rear along the long edge, which are bulbous at the ends, and may have been peened over to fit something. On the other face is a design which seems to have been quite crudely etched into it. Two rectangular frames parallel to the short edge are decorated with cross hatch with a plain rectangle between them. There are then curved panels with…

An incomplete copper-alloy mount dating to the Roman period, c. AD 43-250. The mount is pelta shaped with a central strand flanked either side by curving rounded lobes. The extent of the remaining mount cannot be confidently determined as the edges are fairly worn. Projecting from one side of the mount is an integrally cast stud. The central strand features a concave groove down its centre. At one end is the stud, the other terminating with a triangular point. The other side of the mount is slightly convex with shallow grooves running around the lobes and towards the tr…

Probable Roman (mid 1st to 3rd century) mount: the copper alloy mount is incomplete or fragmentary. The body of the mount is an oval shape with a truncated and broken terminal, and at the opposite edge there is a integral sub-rectangular plate. The plate is decorated with fine transverse grooves which have been interupted by a circular perforation or cell. On the reverse thiscircular perforation or cell has a stud protruding. Due to corrosion it is not clear whether the stud is integral or seperate to the mount. The stud has a wide circular shank and terminals with an integral fla…

A near complete Early Medieval cast copper alloy and gilded belt mount, buckle plate or other strap fitting dating to AD 500-600. Within this rectangular border is a design, also in cast high relief, depicting what looks like a figure of eight with a double twist at its centre. One of the loops, assumed to be the uppermost, is larger than the other, and contains a raised sub-circular shape within it. If the design is interpreted as anthro…

The main panel is recatngular and contains curved rouletterd lines, with some areas filled with rocker arm or wriggle-work engraving. A second repousse bar defines the other end of the main panel, and the plate con…

An incomplete Medieval or Post Medieval copper alloy belt or strap mount c.  AD 1500 - 1700. It is oval in shape, flat, with a knop at each end, one slightly wider and rounded at end, other with a thinner profile. Two rectangular section integral spikes lie underneath, one with its point missing, now both bent over. There is some evidence, see below, that this might be a strap slide but the spikes do not seem long enough, and perhaps would have held the mount too close to the leather for that purpose. A design of semi circular shapes and other unclear motifs are incised or st…

Incomplete object made of sheet copper alloy, possibly a mount, buckle plate or, given its size, possibly a strap plate dating to the medieval period (c. 1200-1450AD). The plate is sub rectangular in plan with four circular rivet holes (one in each corner).  The upper face of the plate is decorated with zig zag decoration sometimes known as “wriggle-work” which was used from at least the early 13th to the early 15th centuries (Egan and Pritchard 2002, 31). The plate appears to have been gilded, but that only now survives on the decorative elements.  The underside…

Fragment of a post-medieval copper alloy object, flat-backed and with moulded decoration on the front, probably a mount. Two opposed inward-pointing hearts and two opposed outward-pointing are arranged around a hexagonal aperture. Parts of the sides, including the tops of the inward-pointing hearts, are intact.  At one end two non-recent breaks flank an outward-pointing heart while its counterpoint lies between a break and an apparently unbroken pointed projection.
