Robertson 2000, 132: " "First century brooches and a small hoard of barbarous radiates were found on the site of a rectangular crop-mark." -Britannia, XVIII (1987), 331; from CBA Group Bulletin, no. 31 (1986), 88 "In December 1985 a group of one regular and nineteen irregular radiates was discovered at West Acre, a known Roman rural site on the Peddars Way, in Norfolk. It was apparent from the restricted range of coin types present and from their tight distribution that this was a hoard, or part of a hoard, although no traces of a container were located. The coins were found by [red…

Robertson 2000, 204-205 no. 837: ""In the autumn of 1922, during ploughing, twenty-eight Roman coins dating from AD 260-273 were unearthed in a field belonging to Mr. C. Williams at Clapton-in-Gordano, near Clevedon, Somerset. No further search was made until July, 1924, when Mr. R. E. Godwin, to whose notice the find had been brought, returned to the locality. The same man was at work who had ploughed up the coins, and he pointed out the spot where, to the best of his recollection, they were discovered. Here Mr. Godwin searched without success, but at some little distance found tw…

Robertson 2000, 227-228 no. 927: ""On 20 May last [i.e. in 1927], a farmer, (Mr. Binning), in searching for stone on his land (River Farm, Cocklake), in the parish of Wedmore, Somerset, came across a paved area about twelve feet square. It was made of rough stone mostly set obliquely, The place is known as Stoke Moor and marked on the O.S. map XXVII SW as the second field from the north end of Culvert Drove. The pavement was about ten or twelve inches from the surface, and several fragments of Romano-British pottery were lying about on it. In order to see if the stones extended any…

Forger's hoard of 121 coinsand blanks (only two coins). The finder also found a fragment of copper alloy rod, a sherd of courseware pottery and a brooch. It is possible, but by no means certain that the hoard was secreted in a pot, but the surviving rim comes from a vessel much larger than was needed to contain the coins and other objects. Robertson 2000, 183 no. 759: ""This hoard of 3rd Century Roman coins was found in June 1960 by Mr. J.T. Allen whilst digging in the garden at 698, Lightwood Road, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent. The find-site is approximately one mile south west of the Roman road leading from Littlechester to Stoke-on-Trent (Margary's number 181) and the coins were contained in a reddish-brown pot which was deposited at the City Museum where an attempt was made to separate the corroded coins. Within the mass, wrapped in coarse-weave material was a pair of silver bracelets in the form of a snake with head …

Robertson 2000, 224-225 no. 915: ""The most important find of the recent excavations at Godmanchester is a hoard of Romano-British jewellery and coins. The site is that of a large Roman building, probably the bath suite of an inn.. The hoard was found scattered amongst the rubble of a rubbish pit which lay just outside the south front of the building. The pottery from this pit was fragmentary and varied widely in date. The latest pieces, however, are comparable with forms dating from the late third to the mid-fourth century from St. Ives and elsewhere. The third-century building evid…

A forger's hoard. This record and the associated records linked to this one are for 121 coins or blanks which were found in around 1994. The finder also found a fragment of copper alloy rod, a sherd of courseware pottery and a brooch. Some coins (not included in the above total) were given to the farmer. From a study of the material it is most likely that this constitutes a forgers' hoard which consisted mainly of metal blanks, destined to be struck into coins. Given that the two identifiable coins are 'barbarous radiates' of the period c. 275-85, it is reasonable to assume that the h…
