Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Heavily eroded medieval copper-alloy pin from a buckle or brooch. It is plano-convex in cross section and appears to be mostly complete, except for extensive surface loss and pitting. The loop is either bent open (currently curving around 180 degrees) or is incomplete: probably the former, since its terminal tapers to a fine point (in thickness) and does not appear to be broken. The shaft tapers in width uniformly from the base of the loop to a point at the opposite end. There is no trace of a collar. 13th to 14th century. Length: 49.5mm. Width: 6.1mm. Thickness (at base of shaft): 4.…

An incomplete Post Medieval cast copper alloy double loop oval buckle dating to the period c. AD 1550- 1650. The buckle is missing one loop and its pin. The surviving loop is D-shaped in cross section with a convex front and flat reverse. It forms a D-shaped loop, the outer edge being curved and the axis bar being straight. At the apex of the loop is a bifid knop projection with a wide groove creating a rest for the pin. Similarly a plain D-shaped projecting knop projects from the outside of the frame where the axis bar meets it.  The brooch is a reddish…

An incomplete copper-alloy medieval annular buckle/brooch. The hoop is circular in both shape and cross-section, its outer face decorated with fine transverse ribs. A simple copper-alloy pin with moulded annular head remains in situ.  Without a recess for the pin this is best defined as a buckle, although its delicate, decorative form shows some similarities to medieval annular brooches. Egan and Pritchard (1991, 64) suggest that the annular buckle form was in use from the late 14th century into the Post-Medieval period and they are difficult to date more closely. Diameter:…

A complete copper-alloy late Medieval or post-medieval annular buckle pin. It is of heavy, cast construction, sub-rectangular in cross-section and has a raised rounded moulding between the open loop and the shaft, decorated with four transverse grooves on the outer face. Its large size suggests that it came from a buckle rather than a brooch. Egan and Pritchard (1991, 64) suggest that the annular buckle form was in use from the late 14th century into the Post-Medieval period. Two buckles with similar pins are illustrated in the report on the Meols assemblage (Griffiths et al…

Medieval copper alloy 'disc-on-pin' buckle frame. The annular frame is divided in half by a non-integral narrower bar let into the reverse of the frame. The frame is pinched over the bar retaining it flush with the lower edge of the frame. The frame has a wide 'brooch-like' pin restriction, set such that the line of the missing pin would run perpendicular to the bar. The configuration is that of a disc-on-pin buckle but the lack of a surviving pin precludes any further classification. Circa AD1250-1500. Dimensions; Diameter 24mm, weight 4.67g.

Fragment from a copper alloy buckle, probably medieval c. 1200-1500 AD. The artefact consists of a strip of copper alloy with two broken terminals which are heavily abraded. The artefact has curved edges and the traces of incised decoration, suggesting it was finely decorated. About halfway along the length of the of the object, the artefact expands and the traces of an iron pin are visible. This item is probably a fragment from a square-shaped brooch with central pin. It has a powdery light green patina.
