An incomplete copper-alloy zoomorphic plate brooch of Roman date. The brooch is in the form of a dog that is flat, slightly bent and missing its neck and head due to old breaks. It has a sub-triangular shaped body with narrow hind leg and thin tail that curves slightly forwards above the hind end of the animal. The front leg is thin and extends forwards to give the impression that the animal is running. On the front face is a large recessed field that covers the majority of the body and preserves traces of blue enamel. On the back face at the hind end of the dog is an integrally cast …

A Roman copper alloy brooch dating from the late 1st century AD. The Brooch has a rounded open cylindrical head, 19.1mm across, with a pierced knop to hold the separate spring. Four turns of the spring remain as does a triangular protrusion on the front of the bow. The bow protrudes from the head by 90 degrees then bends through 45 degrees before straightening back to 90 degrees; creating a 'P' shaped profile. Two fragments of catch plate protrude from the reverse. The brooch is a two piece Colchester derivative probably dating to AD. 50-100. The brooch is 38.5mm long and the bow at…

A forger's hoard. This record and the associated records linked to this one are for 121 coins or blanks which were found in around 1994. The finder also found a fragment of copper alloy rod, a sherd of courseware pottery and a brooch. Some coins (not included in the above total) were given to the farmer. From a study of the material it is most likely that this constitutes a forgers' hoard which consisted mainly of metal blanks, destined to be struck into coins. Given that the two identifiable coins are 'barbarous radiates' of the period c. 275-85, it is reasonable to assume that the h…

Cast lead-alloy plaque or token, probably dating from the later medieval or post-medieval period, i.e. c. 1500-1800. The token or plaque is only decorated on the obverse: it depicts circles and what looks like Roman numerals around the outer edge; however, if they are numerals or writing, they are very difficult to read. It is more likely that it is a non-sensical inscription similar to those sometimes found on purse frames or brooches. Furthermore, the token was perforated for suspension. Lead tokens/plaques like these are frequently found by metal-detectorists and notoriously difficu…

Incomplete Roman Colchester one-piece brooch missing its spring mechanism, pin and most of the catchplate. It measures 70.34mm in length and weighs 10.67g.
1st century AD.
The wings, which are flat and rectangular in shape, span 15.05mm. From the centre of the reverse extends two broken stumps for the forward-facing hook and spring mechanism. There appear to be two vertical lines flanking either end to the front, although the entire surface of the brooch has lost its original patina.
The bow is oval in section where it extends from the wings, 7.27x4.53mm. It curves upwards bef…

It is a silver penny of King Edward I, from the Canterbury mint, class 9b1 (c.1299 to end 1300/early 1301). The coin would be of the official English sterling standard, i.e. about 92.5% fine silver. The coin has been altered by the addition of a suspension loop that appears to be of silver also. Its current weight, with the loop, is 1.82g.
The conversion of English coins of the later 13th-century into jewellery is well-attested by surviving examples. The commonest type is the conversion of a coin into a brooch by the addition of a pin to one side, with the other (usually the sid…

A fragment of a cast copper alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends type), Mackreth 2011, 4.l, Plate 48. The wings are semi-cylindrical with wing caps. Each cap has a central perforation which supports a copper alloy axis bar. Around the axis bar the spring is coiled, forming coils which are so corroded it is difficult to count them. From the spring the pin extends, however the pin is missing on this example. There is also the remains of a horizontal bar leading from the spring which is held in place by an integral perforated lug at t…

Part of the bow and arms of a Roman copper alloy bow brooch of unknown type. The bow terminates before the break in a thickened section with three ridges. It then flares slightly to meet the arms, with vertical parallel ribs on the bow. The arms are solid and formed around what appears to be a central wire core. They are also decorated with vertical ribs around the arms. There is a flat circular band around one of the arms, possibly a contemporary repair. The construction of the arms resembles that of a crossbow brooch (with the wire possibly allowing for the attachment of terminals, n…

A copper-alloy jeton brooch, created from a medieval jeton type, which is contemporary to sterling bust jetons, 1280-1343 in date. The reverse of this jeton, being the outer face of the brooch, has a cross Moline and a border of pellets. The obverse of the jeton can no longer be seen, apart from a border of pellets, as it is worn and the pin obscures it. The jeton brooch measures 20.5mm in diameter and weighs 3.2g. The pin is attached to the jeton via a single central copper-alloy rivet and consists of a strip. This is tapering and bent over at one end, perhaps forming the catchplate,…
