Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A lithic flake possibly dating to the Lower/Early Middle Paleolithic period c 500,000-180,000 BC.
The tertiary flake has been stuck with a hard hammer with a prominent bulb of percussion and rippling on the ventral face. One long edge may have short abrupt retouch, but the removals are irregular and may be damage, so it is suggested this is more likely a waste flake or debitage.
Length: 60.22mm; width: 30.57mm; thickness; 9.53mm and weight: 13.40g.
The patination of the flake suggests an early date possibly of the Lower/Early Middle Paleolithic period.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A small complete sub-cordate handaxe of Wymer (1999) type G dating to the Lower/Early Middle Paleolithic period c 500,000-180,000 BC.
The tool has a flat butt and is assymetrical with one convex surface and one slightly flatter. It has been bifacially worked with covering soft-hammer flake removals on both sides. The arises are slightly worn and the tool has been knapped from blue grey flint with dark buff areas.
Measurements: length: 104.83mm; width: 60.82mm; thickness: 21.64mm and weight: 145.30g.

A complete flint bout coupé handaxe dating to the Late Middle Palaeolithic, c. 60,000-40,000 BC.
In plan the object is broadly sub-triangular, with a flat butt and rounded tip. In cross-section it is lenticular.
The handaxe is bifacially worked with covering, scaled, flake removal with deep rippling and some irregular short, scaled semi-abrupt retouch around all edges. The arises are relatively unworn and one ridge is crushed on centre of the dorsal face.
The flint is transluscent black/dark brown with sparse large pale platelet inclusions and occasional small areas of…

A knapped flint handaxe of Lower Palaeolithic date (c. 450,000-250,000 BC). The handaxe is sub-cordate in plan view, and demonstrates a very high degree of bilateral symmetry. In profile view, the piece is slightly asymetrical, being slightly 'humped' on on face through failure of the knapper to completely remove a small protrusion. The piece demonstrates numerous flake scars across both surfaces, probably mainly of soft hammer origin, and none of the original support can be seen as the piece has been modified too intensely. Some edge damage is visible near the tip, which has resulted…

A complete knapped flint Acheulean handaxe or biface of Lower Palaeolithic date, c. 500,000-250,000 BC. The object survives complete, although has evidently undergone some considerable exposure and post-depositional movement due to the degree of rolling, abrasion and incipient frost fractures visible on the object's surfaces. In plan view, the handaxe is broadly sub-ovate, with a pointed tip and butt. Bifacial heavily invasive soft-hammer removals cover most of the object, though the truncated ends of these indicate that the handaxe has been worked down intensively from its original f…

County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint-knapped possible Early to Middle Palaeolithic 'Clactonian' flint chopper, c. 500,000-40,001 BC. The object is entirely covered in a light brown cortex, save for the knapped end, which has a large prepared platform and four elongated removals; the distal face seems to bear a hinge fracture below the platform. The exposed knapped surfaces have an overall even blue-grey patina.

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Published
An Acheulian culture flint biface (handaxe) of Palaeolithic age, in fine condition. The implement has the characteristic flattened base or 'bout coupé' of Neanderthal manufacture. Both sides of the biface have been invasively flaked consistent with soft-hammer percussion. The implement is uniformly patinated in a light creamy colour. It appears to be complete and in original condition.
The biface was found on a field surface in West Sussex. It has been examined by Dr Nick Ashton, Curator of the Department of Prehistory at the British Museum, who has confirmed that it is Neanderthal…

Object type: BACKED BLADE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Published
A prehistoric flint backed knife. The knife measures 95 mm long, 55.6 mm wide, 19.65 mm thick and weighs 97.4 grams. It is sub-oval in plan and lozenge shaped in section, with a ridge running down the centre of the dorsal face.
The tool may be as early as upper Palaeolithic (circa 40,000 to 8300 BC) , although it is possible that it is early Neolithic in date (circa 3500 to 2900 BC), as such tools were produced throughout prehistory. The large size and shape of the knife suggests that it is probably not Mesolithic (circa 8300 to 3500 BC), when such tools were generally smaller. The …

Lower Palaeolithic, Acheulean, bifaced ovate flint hand axe. The hand axe is oval, and the thickest area about half of the way down. It is generally symmetrical in plan and profile with a slight S shape to the edge, more prominent on one side to the other. The axe is almost completely covered in shallow flake removal scars with evidence for more precise retouch around some edges. There is some small evidence of relatively modern edge damage particularly around the edges. The arises on both faces are slightly smoothed consistant with some post depositional wear but not long term rollin…

Broken end of a Lower Palaeolithic, Acheulean, bifaced ovate flint hand axe. The axe appears to have been originally oval, symmetrical in plan and profile although only one quarter is now complete and part of another quarter. Both sides are completely covered in shallow invasive retouch and the edges show some hackling and breaking. There is an old, irregular break across one end which has removed c.50% of the handaxe, there is another break down one side which has removed the edge, both are accidental or natural. The flint is very weathered and water worn with bright orange iron stai…

Lower Palaeolithic, Acheulean, bifaced ovate flint hand axe. The hand axe is oval, with the point end slightly narrower than the butt and the thickest area about 2/3rds of the way down. It is symmetrical in plan and profile with a slightly reverse S shape to the edge. The axe is completely covered in shallow flake removal scars with evidence for more precise retouch around some edges and possibly the removal of a tranchet sharpening flake from one side of the point. Palaeolithic Acheulian handaxe of ficron type with a long tapering point and large, partially worked, butt. The point is formed with invasive shallow flaking and is pointed oval in cross section. There are small areas of natural cortex remaining on one side. The point widens and thickens to the large lozenge shaped butt. The widening is a fairly consistant taper down the ficron but the thickness tapers gradually at first before stepping out more steeply half of the way down. The butt is large with some long, shallow flake removals on two sides and the base; the base also has areas of h…
