Object type: COMBINATION TOOL
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dudley
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A Neolithic (c. 4000 B.C. – c. 2350 B.C.) combination tool, comprising a backed knife, scraper and a worked point. Manufactured on a secondary flake of un-patinated dark grey flint. The thicker, lateral edge on the dorsal face has the remains of the cortex and has been invasively retouched to blunt it to facilitate handling the tool. The opposing edge, used for cutting, has utilisation wear along its length. The proximal end has the bulb of percussion and has been modified to produce a worked point. Abrupt retouch around the distal end has resulted in a small end scraper.

Object type: LEAF ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Solihull
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete leaf arrowhead dating to the Neolithic period (c. 4000 - 2150 BC). The arrowhead is formed on a brownish-grey coloured tertiary flint flake; both the dorsal and ventral faces are extensively retouched around all edges. The arrowhead is lentoid or pointed oval in plan and lentoid in cross section. The butt of the arrowhead has been trimmed and extensively reworked removing any trace of the striking platform or bulb of percussion. The ripples of percussion can be made out on the ventral face. At least one ridge is visible on the dorsal face. The retouch on the ventral face is…

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Solihull
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete knapped or flaked flint leaf shaped arrowhead, of Neolithic dating (c. 3500 BC to c. 2500 BC).
The arrowhead is leaf shaped in plan, consisting of a pointed oval shape.. It has been made from a piece of tertiary debitage as no cortex (outer rind) is visible on either the dorsal (upper) and ventral (lower) faces.
It measures 44 mm in length, 21 mm wide and 3 mm thick. It weighs 4.5 g.
The arrowhead has been made from a grey coloured flint and is opaque.

A damaged flint arrowhead discovered as part of an excavation undertaken by Solihull Archaeological Group. The report on the flint below was produced by Alex Thompson for Solihull Archaeological Group.
'Flint from Solihull Archaeology Group
Leaf-shaped arrowhead.
Date: earlier to later Neolithic, c 3500-2100 BC
Weight 1.5g
Max. length: 3.2mm; max width: 1.25mm; max thickness: 5mm.
Incomplete example with the butt end broken off, probably as a result of a miss hit during firing against a solid object. There is also some slight damage to the opposite side in two places. It has b…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dudley
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A prehistoric flint scraper of probable late Neolithic or early Bronze Age date, dating from circa 3000 BC to circa 1500 BC. The scraper has been made on a long flake and has been retouched from the dorsal side using pressure flaking. This retouch occurs on both edges and at the distal end. A ridge runs down the centre of the dorsal face, making the flint sub-triangular in section. It measures 43.95 mm long, 22.24 mm wide, 9.07 mm thick and weighs 10.3 grams. The flint is a dark to pale grey in colour.

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dudley
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint waste flake of prehistoric date, probably Neolithic or Bronze Age, and dating from circa 4500 BC - 1000 BC. The flake is cortical in small areas at the butt and the tip of the distal end, and it has no obvious shape for a tool. However, what appears to be deliberately fine retouch at the distal end may have enabled the flake to be used as a knife and this is a distinct possibility. It measures 50.06 mm long, 20.62 mm wide, 5.15 mm thick and weighs 6 grams. The flint is pale to dark grey in colour with small areas of cream cortex.

Object type: AXEHEAD ROUGHOUT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dudley
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An unfinished roughout for a flint axehead, dating to the Neolithic period. The wedge shaped roughout has been bifacially flaked around its edges and some flaking has been undertaken further into the body of the flint. The butt is still very thick and the roughout seems to have been abandoned before this part of the axe was refined. Much cortex remains on both faces and on the butt and sides of the roughout. It is not immediately clear why the axehead was abandoned before it was finished, although as the butt is still very thick it may be that the desired shape for the axehead was simp…

Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dudley
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A prehistoric, probably Neolithic, flint tool formed from a flake. There is retouch along both lateral edges and a notch has been taken out of the cortical distal end. This may have been a composite tool, with the left lateral edge appropriate for use as a cutting blade, and the blunter retouch on the right lateral edge, confined to the area around the distal end, used as a scraper. The retouch at the distal end may have functioned as a scoop, scraper or gauge. The flint is dark grey in colour and partly cortical. Other worked flint tools and a Neolithic ground axe have been recovered …

Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dudley
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A prehistoric, probably Neolithic, flint knife formed from a flake. The flake has been retouched along its proximal edge in order to blunt the edge and make it more comfortable to hold. The opposite, distal end has also been retouched, though here this was presumably to sharpen or serrate the edge for use as a cutting or sawing blade. The flint used is a cream to pale grey colour.
