County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete flint borer of Mesolithic date (c. 9000-3500 BC).
Description: The lithic is sub-triangular in plan and concavo-convex in section. The left hand side of the dorsal surface contains a small number of short, parallel removals done at a semi-abrupt angle. The distal end appears to have been abruptly blunted with a worked point for boring. The ventral surface is concave with ripples of percussion emanating from the proximal end. There are shallow flakes situated along the proximal and right hand edges. The lithic retains no cortex and is therefore a tertiary flak…

The cross section is roughly symmetrical and sub oval in shape and the butt is narrowed and flat. There are two tranchet removals at the cutting edge on one face, one of which ends in a hinge fracture. The other face has a number of smaller removals providing a curved edge. Overall the distal tip has a pointed shape and an asymmetrical chi…

Description: The core is very roughly conical.. The striking has very minor conchoidal fractures, which indicates use of soft hammer technology. The removals appear to be quite small and emanate from the apex of the core. There is a concave side which may relate to an area of lower quality flint with inclusions and faults which may be why the core was abandoned or broke away from a larger body. The flint is heavily mottled grey colour except for the patch of poorer quality area which has white flecks.
