An incomplete cast copper alloy artefact, possibly a staff terminal, of uncertain dating, but possibly Late Medieval in dating (AD 1400 to AD 1700). The object has a spherical terminal (c.22.8 mm diameter, c.20.1mm high) that is hollow and narrows slightly towards its attatchment point. The sphere is decorated by 13 circular holes of varying size (max 4.1mm diameter, min 3.3mm) drilled from the outside surface into the sphere. At the bottom of the sphere is a cylindrical attatchement point. This is 10.1mm long and 11.2mm in diameter narrowing slightly towards …

A fragment of an Early Medieval to Meddieval copper-alloy head from a cross-staff dating to circa AD 1000-1100. Only a small section of one face survives. Copper alloy probable staff terminal. Cast hollow openwork sphere on an integral square base, supported by a squared column at each of the corners of the base. The spherical part comprises a series of triangular apertures, so arranged as to afford views of a cross pattee from three distinct viewpoints, while viewed from the top a Star of Solomon [latterly Star of David] appears delineated by the triangular holes, some of which do duty in forming parts of both the top and side-viewed motifs. Three series’ of bosses or moulded pellets add to the design: there are four on top, a medial…

Distorted, probably right-angled corner fragment of a copper alloy hollow object with four faces pierced by triangular apertures. Possibly part of a Late Saxon to medieval staff terminal though the rectangularity of what survives is quite unlike the discoidal and globular form of most such objects. A cast copper alloy terminal or head from a staff of later early medieval or Norman date (AD 1000 -1200). The staff terminal is broadly sub-spherical in plan and profile being cast as a single piece. From the base of the lower half of the staff head a cylindrical / tubular socket extends. The head of the staff is decorated with a cast pierced pattern of lattice like openwork ornamented with projecting knop like bosses. A copper alloy finial originally attached to a cross-staff or similar, dating to the medieval period (c. 11th-12th centuries AD). The object is composed of an intricate lattice-style openwork sphere, with interlacing lines forming lozenge-shaped holes. Each crossing point is decorated with a raised knob; these vary in size and shape, but are all broadly spherical. The top of the object, where the lattice meets in a central point, is decorated with five of these knobs, four smaller topped with one larger, irregular example. An incomplete copper-alloy possible staff terminal of Medieval date, possibly of the eleventh to twelfth centuries. The staff terminal has an openwork form comprised of four flat narrow rectangular-sectioned strips of copper-alloy that form a cross at the base that extend from each of the four corners to form uprights that join at the top to form a lattice where four knops divide each section. Towards the base, a band of narrow metal transverse the circumference and is decorated with a knop where the band meets each upright. One upright, connecting the base to the band, is missin…

An incomplete cast copper alloy terminal or head from a cross-staff or sword/dagger pommel, Early Medieval to Medieval c. 1000 - 1500 AD. The terminal is in an open-work form and appears to have been broadly sub-spherical/ball like. The terminal has a single sub triangular hole and a series of small blister like protrusions over the surface, typical of both staff tops and sword/dagger pommels of the period. The surface has a mid-green patina with a possible ferrous core. It measures 26.72mm by 23.38mm and is 1.37mm thick with a weight of 4.6gm. See similar - WILT-A7B87E
