Object type: CHAFING DISH
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Walsall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a probable Late Medieval or Early Post Medieval cast copper alloy chafing dish. The fragment consists of part of the concave rim and wall of the vessel, and the upward projecting and tapering dish-support. The dish support is sub-trapezoidal in section. The rim is thickened, in the form of a distinct flange/rib. On a broken edge of the fragment, there is an arced incision of unknown function. It has been suggested in other examples that similar incisions may be repair holes for rivets (e.g. see records SUR-DB1FD4 and SUR-D1AF97) and the vessel is also likely to have had …

Description: A plain gold finger ring of late Medieval to early post-Medieval date. D-section hoop. The ring is in very good condition with some minor nicks and scratches visible. There are no inscriptions or markings on either the inner or outer surface. The ring was found during excavations by Birmingham Archaeology. It was found in a context dated to the 15th or 16th century, and is made of gold. Given its material and age, it qualifies as treasure under The Treasure Act 1996. Other finds from this context were pottery, iron and animal bone. Although useful in dating the …

Broad period: MEDIEVAL

An incomplete lead papal bulla, probably of Urban III (1185-1187) or Urban IV (1216-1264). Mass: 10.2g; length: 31.2mm; width: 20.1; thickness: 4.2mm. The fragment, almost half of a papal bulla, is sub-semi-circular, with the straighter edge being a break. The papal bulla has a brown/off-white surface, which covers the break. Therefore the break does not appear to be recent. On the front of the papal bulla there is an (incomplete) inscription which reads: U[]/BA[]/P[] over three lines, with a pellet border around the curved edge. On the reverse of the papal bulla is the head of Saint …

The fragment consists of a curved, sub-circular sectioned portion, with two flat ends with broken edges. Mass: 85.2g; maximum length: 77.6mm; maximum width: 36.0mm, diameter of the sub-circular sectioned portion: 11.3mm-15.4mm. Copper-alloy sheet sword chape. Medieval. Length: 38.1mm, width: 18.9mm, depth: 5.9mm, mass: 3.0g. Frormed from a sheet bent around. In plan, the chape tapers and is bent over at the bottom. There are sub-circular perforations at the top of the chape, including one at the front which is particularly large (diameter: 6.3mm). The chape has a green patina, with a white metal coating partially remaining on the exterior. Anthony de Reuk dates sheet chapes to 13th/14th century (see "Finds Recording Guide" v.1.1, Geake, 2001, ill.31).

A copper-alloy mount, probably medieval in date and quite likely a harness fitting. The mount measures 58.77 mm long. It gradually flares in width from 6.48 mm to 9.5 mm. At the thinner end it terminates in a slight knop. At the wider end it flares suddenly to 18.37 mm, at the same time becoming thinner, almost spatulate. However, it is broken here and it is difficult to determine the extent to which it flared. Traces of gilding are visible on this thin, flared section. The mount has two attachment holes, one at the top at the thinnest end, another in the middle, 23.1 mm from the firs…

Object type: FLOOR TILE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A medieval ceramic patterned floor tile of 14th to 15th century in date. The tile is decorated with a white clay slip which has been poured into a pattern created by a wooden stamp. The tile was then fired after being sprinkled with a lead ore, which had produced a slightly uneven yellow glaze. The ceramic itself is of a solid orange red/colour and also has traces of a lead glaze on the reverse. The tile is incomplete, with approximately one quarter missing from one end. It measures 125 mm in length and 104 mm wide, although when complete it would have been square. It is 28 mm thick. …

A cast copper-alloy cup weight, probably from a set of nesting weights. It is likely to be late medieval to post-medieval in date. The weight measures 11.47 mm high and tapers in diameter from 30.95 mm at the rim to 25.23 mm at the base. It weighs 22.2 grams, the equivalent of 0.783 troy ounces - it probably originally weighed one ounce. There is deep filing on the base. Where the original surface of the rim survives two decorative ring and dots can be discerned. The interior of the base of the weight has a circular depression in the centre and a stamped circular makers mark which con…

Two ceramic tiles. One is probably a floor tile, the other is less certain and may possibly be a roof tile. The floor tile is sub-square in shape although it may be broken on one edge. It measures 84.5 mm long and 83 mm wide and is 20.5 mm thick. It weighs 244.5 grams. It is undecorated. The other tile is incomplete and measures 99 mm long, 70 mm wide and 13 mm thick. It weighs 83.9 grams. It is also undecorated. Because of their lack of decoration the tiles are difficult to date. Finds recovered from the same location include medieval 14th century flo…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of what may be an architectural pipe. The material appears to be concrete rather than ceramic, and is curved, suggesting it may have been a pipe. The interior is covered in a dark grey to black deposit - this does not appear to be a glaze and so may be associated with the object's use, possibly a carbon deposit from burning. The exterior of the concrete is decorated with four lateral ridges, perhaps indicating that the feature was in part of a building intended to be visible. This fragment is of indeterminate date, but it has been recovered from an area which has produced m…

A cast copper-alloy strap fitting of medieval date, dating from circa 1250 to 1400 AD. The fitting is single looped and sub-oval, with an off-set straight attachment bar and a pair of opposed internal trianglar projections which would have secured the strap in place whilst allowing the fitting to slide up and down the strap. A very similar example is illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, page 234; Figure 1262), which was recovered from a context dating from 1350 to 1400. A cast lead ampulla of medieval date. The ampulla is hollow and was designed to contain a dose of the thaumaturgic water dispensed to pilgrims at many shrines and holy wells. The ampulla is damaged and the neck and suspension lugs are missing and only the circular chamber survives. This is decorated on one side with a six petalled flower and on the other with a crowned letter W. Ampullae with the crowned letter 'W' are thought to be associated with the cult of Our Lady of Walsingham (Spencer, 1990. 60-61), and the W may perhaps have had a more general meaning as a double-V for the vi…
