This is an early Medieval hammered silver penny of Aethelred II (The Unready - 978-1016). The coin is from the first hand series c.979-85. The obverse depicts a diademed bust right and the reverse, the hand of Providence issuing from the cloud with A (alpha) and W (omega) to either side. The Moneyer is Herebeorht at Lewes (LÆP). The coin is in a relatively uncirculated condition with a corroded surface and weakly struck reverse.

Possible Islamic, arabic or near eastern coin. Probably from the reign of Harum-al-Rashid (170-193 AH [786-809 AD]). Below the reverse of the coin is (Al-Fa dl). The obverse is badly corroded and therefore the mint is indistinct. The occurance of similar cut silver arabic coins (and silver artefacts) has been explained through contact with the Viking or Anglo-Scandinavian trade routes.
