A cast copper-alloy early medieval stirrup strap mount of Williams Class A. The mount is in fairly poor condition and is very worn, with no decoration visible whatsoever. It is pentagonal in shape. It does not have an angled attachment flange, but instead has two circular rivet holes at the base. At the top, at the narrowest part of the mount, there is a further circular rivet hole. The mount has a reddy brown patina with many areas of green copper corrosion. It measures 46.19 mm long, 30.02 mm wide, 4.31 mm thick and weighs 14.8 grams. It is likely to date from the eleventh century AD.

The item is a flat uniface rectangular shape with each terminal sharply tapering into a point. At each terminal there are three circular indentations. The body of the item has a double row of punched marks forming a border along the two lengths. In between the border there are four ring and dot designs. There are two holes, possibly rivet holes at each corner of a long edge. One holes is incomplete. The is traces of tinning on this surface. The reverse is plain and has traces of a more dull type of tinning.

The mount is incomplete. The shape is egg-like, however the base and upper half is missing. Either side there are sub-triangular protrusion which look similar to turned down ears. At the top edge, on the upper surface there is a protruding copper alloy rivet. The design on the upper face is an interlace design with a pellet either side. The reverse of the mount is plain. The remains of a second rivet can be seen in the lower centre region of the mount. Within the design there are shallow cells which appear to have a cream coloured enamel.

A badly corroded but complete cast copper alloy sword pommel, dating to the 9th/ 10th century (length: 25.8mm; width: 55.3mm; thickness: 19.2mm; weight: 55.29g). Of a roughly triangular-shaped design, the pommel is convex on the underside, and is decorated with five stepped and rounded lobes, each increasing in size with the largest in the centre. The pommel has a hollow interior with an off-set rectangular hole at the top for the sword's tang to go through. The buckle is a 'D' shape in plan. The strap bar is sub semi-circular in cross-section. The terminals of the loop are a zoomorphic head. The zoomorphic decoration occurs on both sides of the loop. The decoration on the upper face of the loop is a series of ?drilled conical shaped indentations. The pin is missing. There are patches of a dark green patina, otherwise there isa red coloured corrosion.

Description: An incomplete circular gold setting, originally with a domed cloisonné garnet setting. The circular backplate is framed by a thin (0.4mm) outer and thicker (1.1mm) inner beaded wire. The thicker wire is carefully made with narrow even beads, but the thin wire has more oblique beads and many Aquätorschnitte, no doubt reflecting the difficulty of manufacturing such extremely fine beaded wire. Four Early Medieval (9th to mid 11th centuries) Game Pieces: All the pieces are cast lead or lead alloy pieces which have an oxidised light cream coloured surface. All four are hollow with thick walls. The first gaming piece is a conical shape with a rounded apex. Around the sides of the apex there are five integral spurs with protruding tips. The object has a backplate apparently made from a number of smaller pieces of gold, which is framed by a gold strip set on edge, 1.5mm wide, which runs around the edge to a butted join at the top. Within this is a two-ply twist of gold wires, c. 0.5mm in diameter, which forms an inner frame and also has a joint at the top. An incomplete cast copper alloy strap end, of Early Medieval dating (c. AD 900 to c. AD 1100). Approximately 25% of the strap end is present, consisting of the base of the tongue shaped strap end. It has a series of holes and bands running down its length, giving an openwork pattern probably representing a plant design, now quite debased. A copper alloy pin, possibly from an Early Medieval (AD 400-600) penannular brooch of Fowler's Type F. The pin is made in one piece and at the front of the head end is a flattened oval in plan. In profile the head is 'C' shaped which is the point where the head would have attached to the brooch frame. A complete sub-cylindrical decorated polychrome glass bead, with flattened ends (diameter: 9.1mm; thickness: 7.7mm; weight: 0.87g), dating to the Early Medieval period, probably 6th-8th century AD. A sub rectangular, sandstone rock with ogham script inscribed down three of the four sides. The front and back sides are smooth. The rock is a dark grey colour and likely to be a shist type rock (metamorphic mudstone/shale). The incisions appear to have been done in a single action, not repeated. It measures 110 mm in length, 38 mm wide and 19 mm thick. It weighs 139 g. Katherine Forsyth (University of Glasgow) has confirmed that the markings are those of an ogham inscription.
