A cut and broken silver Islamic dirham, possibly of the Samanid or Abbasid dynasties, which has been 'hacked', possibly by Viking traders. Nearly 1/4 of the coin survives which is cut cleanly along one radius and partially broken along the other. Dirhams circulated for an extended period of time in Arabia, Scandinavia and England and are commonly found as hack silver in the Viking period. This association is likely to date this fragment to the mid 9th - 10th centuries AD. It is similar to YORYM-A2BAFE Dimensions: 18mm long and 19mm wide, 1mm thick and weighs 1.19g

A lead alloy spindle whorl. In section it comprises one shallow, truncated cone forming the top, with a rounded frame and a circular pedestal underneath. The top is decorated with raised four circular shapes, proud of the surface. There is also a raised line around the circumference and another around the central hole. These raised 'turrets' are seen on early medieval weights and gaming pieces, such as WAW-5760D1, which are ascribed to Viking period activity. The rear is more worn and the decoration is therefore more difficult to discern: the inner raised ped…

A lead spindle whorl of Early-Medieval to medieval date, c.AD 700 - 1200. Walton Rogers Form B2. The spindle whorl is circular with two flat faces, rounded sides and a central hole running through it, and any decoration it might have had is no longer apparant. The metal has a light white patina with darker patches and is worn. The hole is 8mm in diameter, suggesting an early-medieval to medieval date (Walton Rogers, 1997, p.1731). It is also of Walton Rogers Form B2 which dates to AD 700-1200. Early Medieval lead alloy weight with copper alloy inset. The weight is square in plan, and rectangular in section and profile. There is some damage to the lead alloy and is possible that the inset may have had some form of surface embellishment like gilding or enamelling. The square copper alloy inset is decorated with a single central square, flanked on each corner with L-shaped cells. This decorative motif on the mount set into the weight can be closely paralleled in Wales with two examples from Anglesey, one of which was found on the Early Medieval enclosed settlement near Llanbedr…

Probably a copper alloy spur goad, possibly Early Medieval to Medieval. It is also possible that it may be a Roman or later conical weight (like YORYM-BF10DD). Only the conical goad and a short length of the neck are present. The neck is flaring suggesting it was very short. Assuming it is a goad then the conical goad and short neck suggest an Early Medieval date. Possibly dates to between c700 and c1100 AD. Length 22mm, diameter 13mm, weight 8.46g

The minor facets of the head each have a centrally punched dot or pellet. The decoration on the main faces is more involved. One consists of and inscribed cross which has arms terminating in punched pellets. There is also a punched…
