An incomplete cast copper-alloy object, probably a book clasp, dating to the 11th century. The object consists of a sub-triangular relief-decorated openwork plate. The base has the projecting semi-circular remains of two originally circular loops, pierced from side to side, which may together have held a hinge bar. The other end (the apex of the triangle) has a zoomorphic decorated knop in the shape of an animal's head, with two pointed-oval eyes outlined by narrow ridges, a snout which is concave on top, open jaws also delineated by lines, and a rounded forehead. The open jaws hol…

At the complete end is a curved hook, as thin as the main strip and bent 100 degrees downwards; it is 6.1mm wide at the top and tapers towards the end. Below this the main body of the clasp is 10.8mm across and 0.5mm thick. There is the rusted remains of an iron rivet through the centre of the remaining section. There are traces of stamped or cast decorati…

Incomplete cast end plate from a copper-alloy Medieval hinged book-clasp of Howsam type A.1.1. The plate is missing, along with most of the two projections at the top of the cast terminal which would have held the hinge bar. The stubs of the projections remain, with old breaks. The end plate is sub-circular in plan with a central circular perforation and an end loop, at 90 degrees to the plane of the main plate. The front is slightly domed, with a transverse lowered area in the centre, around the perforation, and transverse rows of punched annulets across the raised areas and at the t…

Hinged terminal from a medieval book clasp, made from copper alloy and cast in one piece. The main part is oval with a central hole, flat on the sides and reverse and convex at the front. The central circular hole is 2.1mm in diameter. From one side of the oval part two lugs project; between these runs a separate copper-alloy bar, around which the attachment end was once hinged. An undecorated rectangular sheet-metal plate is bent in half around the bar, and represents the only part of the attachment end surviving; the rest is lost due to an old break. To the other side of the cent…
