Medieval cast copper-alloy strap end for a book clasp of Howsam type A.9.2, with characteristic box-like construction. The socketed box chape containing the strap is square-ended with a central V-shaped notch in the upper edge and is pierced by a single copper alloy rivet to secure the strap. It is cast in one piece with a strip of silver around the edge. The remains of a leather strap can still be seen inside the socket which would have been attached to the book. The face of the body of the clasp is decorated with a rectangular panel inscribed with the Lombardic capital letter 'Д' o…

A medieval copper alloy book clasp of Howsam type A.1.2 (2016, 30-31), made from copper alloy and cast in one piece dating to 1100-1500. The terminal comprises three sections; the zoomorphic head, its central attachment point and its projecting terminal loop.
The head is made of a large flat-sided terminal knop. It is crudely zoomorphic in profile, with a pointed brow-ridge on top with two rounded ears behind, a nose at the end and is pierced transversely by a circular hole that is slightly broken on its upper surface.
The central part is circular and domed, flat on the back and…

The central part is oval and domed, flat on the back and convex at the front with a circular hole rnning thorugh from front to back. The central circular hole is 1.8mm in diameter. From one side of the oval is a large flat-sided terminal knop which is crudely zoomorphic in profile, with a pointed brow-ridge on top and a nose at the end, with an open mouth below. The large knop is thicker than the main oval section, 5.8mm rather than 4.3mm. On the other side of th…

A hook-piece from a copper-alloy post-medieval book-clasp. It is sub-rectangular in shape, with a slightly flared, cusped attachment end; the other end is squared off with a central rectangular curved hook, narrowed in relation to the end.
At the flared end is a single central rivet hole; the head of an iron rivet is corroded in place. A second corroded rivet head is located around two thirds of the way along the clasp. On the upper surface is a stamped ring-and-dot design towards the centre formed of two rings. It would seem to be otherwise plain.
This artefact has corroded to…

A bent hook-piece from a copper-alloy post-medieval book-clasp. It is sub-rectangular in shape, with a slightly flared attachment end; the other end is squared off with a central rectangular curved hook.
At the flared end is a single central rivet hole; the head of a copper-alloy rivet is corroded in place. A second corroded rivet head is located around two thirds of the way along the clasp. On the upper surface possible curvilinear decoration can possibly be discerned below the hook. Anything beyond is obscured by corrosion product; there is a circular discolouration around the ri…

A damaged and incomplete hook-piece from a copper-alloy post-medieval book-clasp. It is sub-rectangular in shape, with a flared attachment end, now heavily abraded; the other end is squared off with a central rectangular curved hook. The main body of the clasp is 17.5mm in width, flaring to a maximum of 20.6mm at the attachment end.
At the flared end is a single central rivet hole; the remnants of an iron rivet is corroded in place. The object is decorated on its upper surface in four main transverse registers separated by transverse ridges moulded in low relief. The register close…

At the flared end is a single central rivet hole; the iron rivet is corroded in place, holding a square copper-alloy rove. The end itself is bevelled slightly. Floral decoration seems to have been stamped in the upper two thirds of the main field: a rose to the right of a second ste…

A probable cast copper alloy book-clasp of 14th century AD date. The fitting measures 58.5mm by 25.9mm by 11.7mm and weighs 30.2g. It consists of three elements: a hollow square section with an open end and two rivets to hold a strap, a hollow lozenge-shaped section with a circular hole in the reverse and a solid square terminal set at ninety degrees to the rest of the strap-end. This has a central hole which, by analogy with other examples, would have held a ring or cord which would have facilitated the removal of the clasp. The front of the square section is decorated with an engrav…
