Copper alloy clasp 16th - 18th century AD. The clasp has a rectangular body of sheet metal with a small hooked tab at one end. There is a rivet hole in the centre near the tab end. The body is undecorated and could be a clog fastener although book-clasps bearing similar decorative motifs (punched ring and dot, the incised 'pheons') can be found illustrated in Crummy (1998, 68; e.g. ref. 2993). These examples are given a 17th-century date. Similar on the database to LIN-2DD746 and SUR-2093D4 The length is 26mm and the width 17mm.

A fragment of copper alloy strip of probably Mediavel date. The copper alloy has a brown patina and is curved. Broken at 26mm long, one end has a narrow projection which is broken at 2mm long from the edge of the rectangular main piece. The reverse is blank. The face has a series of symmetrical horizontal and wavy lines. This is probably a fragment of a bookclasp. Bracelet or buckle plate are also possibilities for function, but less likely.

An Early Post-Medieval (1500-1700) copper alloy book-clasp, consisting of the clasp or 'hook' end only. It measures 51.96x(max)12.91x3.66mm and weighs 2.9g. The sheet copper alloy is 0.82mm thick and parallel-sided (c.10.7mm), expanding at the end opposite to the hook. The book fitting is decorated with punched decoration and has a rivet hole (with in situ corroded iron rivet) at the expanded end. Around this rivet hole this is in the form of a ring of oval punches with triangles around. There is a pellet at the centre of each triangle. Towards the other end is a pair of grooves in …

A corroded and incomplete hook-piece from a copper-alloy post-medieval book-clasp. It is formed of two sheet plates of copper alloy which have been held together by three rivets, two of iron and one of copper-alloy, though the two iron rivets have now corroded and caused the plates to separate slightly. This artefact is broadly sub-rectangular in shape, with a flared attachment end on the upper plate (12.8mm wide) which has been abraded, particularly to one corner of the upper sheet. The upper surface of this latter is decorated with finely incised longitudinal incisions, with additio…

A cast medieval copper-alloy book-clasp of Howsam type A.1.3. It is a slightly trapezoidal frame with an outside edge around which a strap fixed to one cover would have been secured. It then extends into a narrow plate with a circular hole which would have fitted over a peg fixed to the opposite cover. The plate is square in cross-section and then widens into a sub-circular shape with a central circular hole. This is at 90 degrees to the rest of the object (running side to side) and was probably used to hold a cord or chain to help in pulling the clasp off the peg; as the hole is bloc…

A complete but bent sheet copper alloy hook-piece from a post-medieval book-clasp. It is flat in section and sub-rectangular in plan with a slightly flared end with scalloped edge. The opposing end terminates in a narrowed, curved hook (W: 6mm). The upper surface is decorated with two ring and dot motifs at the flared and, and the other half is decorated with longitudinal grooves. Two copper alloy rivets survive, one at each end. This type of book clasp is dated to the later 16th century to mid-18th century, c.1550-1750. Compare DENO-FBA075 and WILT-E96352.
