Description: Small flat silver book-clasp of post-medieval date. It is neatly made from thick silver sheet, rounded at both ends and with a concave waist in between. A flat turned-under hook has been broken at one end, which has shoulders curving down into the waist. There is a tiny pointed angle between the waist and the other rounded end, which is oval, slightly larger, and set transversely. This end has a hole, neatly lozengiform on the front and circular on the reverse, presumably for attachment to a strap. The hole is now filled with greenish corrosion on …

Description: Gilded silver finger-ring with twisted wire hoop and bezel in the shape of a letter, probably an M. The hoop has now broken away from one side of the bezel, and the bezel and its attached hoop bent upwards. The break shows that the hoop was made from two wires tightly twisted together and then hammered to produce a smooth outline. The M-shaped bezel is separately cast in relief, with a flat back, and soldered on to hide the join in the hoop. It is made from two arches and has a serif at the base of the central line between the two, and an out-turned projection at the base…

Probable fragment of book clasp. A pentagonal piece of thin copper-alloy sheet, it has two short parallel sides leading from a longer broken edge to a right-angled point. An engraved ring in the point has a copper-alloy rivet surviving in a hole through the centre. The broken edge is broken across three similar rings or circles, each with a hole in the centre, forming ring-and-dot ornament; the holes in these rings do not appear to be functional. The reverse is undecorated and the break is quite fresh.
The length (from broken edge to tip of point) is 16.5mm, and the width is 16mm. …

Cast copper-alloy openwork book fitting dating to the Medieval period, c. 1100-1200. The plate for attachment of this fitting onto a book has been lost, and only the 'clasp' portion now remains.
The item is sub rectangular in plan and takes the form of a bird with an openwork vine design at the centre. The bird's head is prominent and forms the tip of the clasp. The head protrudes from the main frame of the fitting with the beak wide open. The eye sockets are inset on the upper jaw or beak and take the form of two semi-circular indents when viewed in plan. This slightly wider area is mostly obscured with a rough green corrosive product and numerous parallel grooved lines extend from the end of this area in to the body of the object, which has a much darker, smoother green patina. An apparently complete early post-medieval (1500-1700) copper alloy book-clasp, with slight damage to the terminal expansion.

An early post-medieval (c AD1500-1700) copper alloy book-clasp, with possibly the end of the hook missing.
The clasp is formed from a thin rectangular strip of metal with a splayed expansion at one end and at the other, the strip narrows (to 4.64mm) and curls over to form a flat section hook. A single rivet hole lies in a central position close to the splayed end, surrounded by two lightly moulded concentric rings, the outer one with perhaps a rope like or sunburst effect within it.
