Cast copper alloy bell. It is conical in shape, with 6 sides meaning the base is hexagonal. The attachment loop has been cast integrally and is circular. Each face has a vertical row of three ring and dot pattern. The bell is broken unevenly before the base and the clapper is missing. This style of bell usually dates to the early Medieval period c.1000-1200. A similarly shaped one was found in a late 10th century deposit from York (Mainman and Rogers; 2000; 2599).

A fragment of a cast copper alloy bell, probably dating to the Early Medieval period, between AD 400 - 1066 (length: 26mm; width: 16.5mm; thickness: 11mm; weight: 3.7g). This bell fragment would have been hexagonal in shape when complete. Only the top of the artefact survives with the stumped copper alloy remains of a suspension loop/ attachment at the tip. The six sides of the bell fragment are particular clear and three of the longest remaining sides have a single ring and dot pattern on them. It is impossible to indicate how big the artefact would have been when complete. Additio…

Copper alloy bell dating to the Early Medieval period, of the type known as a 'Norse' bell. It has a hexagonally faceted cone shape with straight sides. The loop at the top of the cone is broken and largely missing. The bottom edge of the bell is crushed and torn, but it is still possible to see that the rim was straight with a small knop or foot at each angle. The object has a light brown patina. Similar examples are known from Coppergate in York and from the PAS database (e.g.DENO-C653A7).

Early medieval Anglo-Scandinavian cast copper alloy clapper bell, incomplete. Rectangular loop (length 8mm, width 6.2mm, thickness 1.6mm thinning towards the top to 0.6mm) with off-centre circular piercing (diameter 1.8mm); most of the lower half of the hexagonal wall of the bell is missing. Reddish-brown surface. The bell is squashed almost flat and is filled with soil. Length 31.6mm, width 17.1mm, thickness 5.9mm, weight 3.36g. A similar hexagonal bell is published in Wikinger Warager Normannen; Die Skandinavier und Europa 800-1200, 1992, SMPK p312-313 no.327c, from a 10th century bu…

An incomplete late Saxon copper alloy bell. The bell has a hexagonal body with worn traces of three ring-and-dots on each face. The suspension loop at the apex is largely missing. The rim is damaged but each 'side' would have been concave. In the centre is the corroded remains of the iron staple for missing clapper on inside. Cf. example illustrated and discussed in Mainman and Rogers (2000) Finds from Anglo-Scandinavian York, 2599, fig.1294. Probably of Norse origin, 10th century.

An almost complete small, cast copper-alloy bell with a hexagonal-shaped body. The bell has been flattened and misses part of the base, due to breaks. At the end of each angle of the hexagonal-shaped body there is a rounded projection. There is an integral circular suspension loop at the apex. The metal is pitted and is a mid reddish-brown in colour. It is probably early-medieval in date, 10th - 11th century. A similarly shaped one was found in a late 10th century deposit from York (Mainman and Rogers; 2000; 2599). Similar to YORYM-7EA6F8 and YORYM-D84BF5 both found at Snape with Tho…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Early Medieval Anglo Scandinavian bell. The hexagonal body has a fluted lower edge and tapers to a semi-circular integral suspension loop at the apex. One side of the bell is missing and although none of the clapper survives, there is some iron staining inside the bell which suggests that the clapper was iron. The length is 28.0mm, the maximum surviving diameter of the mouth is 24.9mm and the weight is 8.01g.

Copper alloy possible bell fragment. Cast concavo-convex fragment from the body of a conical or pyramidal object; a rib in low relief runs along the convex surface at the point where it curves or changes angle more sharply. This may be a fragment from a small bell; the angular form is characteristic of Viking-Age settlements. Suggested date: Possibly Early Medieval, 850-1100. Anglo-Scandinavian bell 8th/12th century AD part of an extensive collection from a known settlement. The bell has an odd formed loop. The width of the mouth is 85.4mm+, the damaged depth of mouth of opening 54.4mm. The surviving depth of the bell is 82.0mm. The depth of the loop is 38.8mm. The loop has an odd section 9.4mm wide and 8.9mm deep strangely shaped with a flange at either side, joint at one side and ring on the inside for the suspension which is probably an extension of the loop. The wall section of the bell is 4.5mm and the base is lost.

An incomplete iron bell, of probable Early Medieval dating. Bells during the Anglo-Saxon period were usually made from a single piece of sheet iron, folded in two, with the seams riveted or joined with copper alloy brazing metal. The brazing metal tends to cover the body on the majority of all known examples. Small iron bells were probably hung around the necks of beasts, but large bells were probably used to summon the faithful to prayer.Examples have been found at Barking Abbey, York and Flixborough. (Ottoway, unpub, Products of the blacksmith in Mid-Late Anglo-Saxon England).
