An incomplete copper alloy 'Norse' bell dating from the early-medieval period, c. AD 850 - 1050. The cast bell is of hexagonal cross-section and is incomplete, missing the clapper and part of the upper loop. The now incomplete loop is integrally cast which projects from the top of the bell. The remaining stubs of the loop suggest that the perforation was oval. The sides of the bell are straight and tapering which divide into six evenly spaced faces with shallow U-shaped notches at the base. The base is damaged and worn. No decoration on the faces of the bell remain. The interi…

An incomplete copper alloy bell of the Early Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian) period (c. AD 850-1000). The artefact consists of an open circular cone with pointed apex which forms and integral, incomplete suspension loop. A raised circumferential ring sits approx. 2mm higher than the open base of the bell. The artefact has become slightly misshapen and squashed on one side, probably as the result of post-depositional factors. The bell has lost its internal clapper. Haldenby and Richards (2016, 4.4.2) note that such bells are likely of decorative use, and since they are found…

Copper alloy bell. Cast pyramidal open bell with four flattened faces converging on a solid loop; split, and encrusted with Vaseline. It is consequently uncertain whether dark patches on the surface represent treatment with oil in antiquity or a degraded patina. The pyramidal form is associated with Viking-Age activity. An iron hand bell of probable Early Medieval date, AD 700 - 1100. It has a rounded rectangular opening at the base, and tapers to the top so the two main faces are rectangular and the sides are triangular. It was made by folding a sheet of iron, so there is a seam down the centre of each side. There are two broken projections from the top, which were probably part of a ring handle; one can be seen extending into the inside of the bell too. The clapper is missing. The surface is rusted and has lumps of corrosion. There is no visible copper surface, so it is not possible to say if the b…

Incomplete, very badly distorted, severely torn and openly splayed Late Saxon copper alloy bell. Of the hexagonal body, three sides and parts of two others are present, but with nothing remaining of the lower edge. The suspension loop is complete and traces of the iron crown staple survive on the inside. The original dimensions cannot be estimated. Weight 3.0g. Perhaps of Norse origin (Mainman and Rogers 2000, 2599, fig.1294) or possibly from Eastern England (Griffiths, D. in Griffiths et al. 2007, 69-70). 10th century. Field JBu14

A complete copper alloy Bell of probable Early-Medieval date (AD 900-1066). The object is composed of a single sheet of copper alloy with a pointed upper and expanded flat lower surface. The object has a hexagonal-shaped body with distinct ridges running the length of each of the edges. There is no indication of an upper suspension loop. The lower surface has minor chipping and abrasions. There is retained guiding across portions of the outer surface. The metal is pitted and is a mid reddish-brown in colour. It is probably early-medieval in date, 10th - 11th century. A similarly…

Copper alloy bell. A long thin conical bell made by rolling sheet of thickness 0.4mm, probably with a butted seam but now disrupted. An oval loop, perhaps hammered and then drilled with a hole of diameter 3.5mm, is set at the narrower end. Bent and squashed. Probably for attachment to clothing or harness. The form does not appear amongst waterfront finds from London, though it is not so distinctive as the markedly triangular facetted bells of Viking Age date. Suggested date: possibly Early Medieval, 1000-1100. Length: 33mm, Width: 12.6mm, Weight (with trapped soil): 3.27gms

An incomplete copper alloy Bell of Early-Medieval date (AD 900-1100). The bell chamber is hexagonal with straight sides tapering steeply towards the top, where it is surmounted by a deep groove which would have formed an attachment loop. The six sides that surround the open bottom end are concave, giving the bell a fluted appearance, and have incurved bases, creating a knop or foot on each of the six corners, two of these knops are fully retained the rest being partially retained due to abraded breaks. Within one of the walls of the bell is a single sub-circular perforation. The bell'…
