An incomplete copper alloy 'Norse' bell dating from the early-medieval period, c. AD 850 - 1050. The cast bell is of hexagonal cross-section and is incomplete, missing the clapper and part of the upper loop. The now incomplete loop is integrally cast which projects from the top of the bell. The remaining stubs of the loop suggest that the perforation was oval. The sides of the bell are straight and tapering which divide into six evenly spaced faces with shallow U-shaped notches at the base. The base is damaged and worn. No decoration on the faces of the bell remain. The interi…

An incomplete copper alloy bell of the Early Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian) period (c. AD 850-1000). The artefact consists of an open circular cone with pointed apex which forms and integral, incomplete suspension loop. A raised circumferential ring sits approx. 2mm higher than the open base of the bell. The artefact has become slightly misshapen and squashed on one side, probably as the result of post-depositional factors. The bell has lost its internal clapper. Copper alloy bell. A long thin conical bell made by rolling sheet of thickness 0.4mm, probably with a butted seam but now disrupted. An oval loop, perhaps hammered and then drilled with a hole of diameter 3.5mm, is set at the narrower end. Bent and squashed. Probably for attachment to clothing or harness. A probable fragment of an iron hand-bell plated with copper-alloy using the 'fusion-plating process' (Bourke 1980; 1983). Only part of the crown and a fragment of one corner survive. The surviving part of the crown appears to be from the corner. It is flat, and appears to have been quadrangular in plan. The surviving face gently flares outwards to the break below. The surface is heavily corroded, and a thick layer of iron is visible on the top and the underside of the crown, perhaps indicating where the handle loop was fitted. Patches of copper alloy plating are visible on the exterio…

The perimeter of the bell curves downwards on all sides to form the body of the bell, which if retaining its present shape would mean that it was sub-rectangular in section. Part of the bell wall survives as a separate fragment, which measures 39 x 23 x 6mm. An incomplete iron bell, of probable Early Medieval dating. Bells during the Anglo-Saxon period were usually made from a single piece of sheet iron, folded in two, with the seams riveted or joined with copper alloy brazing metal. The brazing metal tends to cover the body on the majority of all known examples. Small iron bells were probably hung around the necks of beasts, but large bells were probably used to summon the faithful to prayer.Examples have been found at Barking Abbey, York and Flixborough. A similar bell was found at Meols, Cheshire (Griffiths et al 2007: 69/pl. 75, no. 390). They are increasingly thought to be characteristic of the Danelaw in the 1…

Silver Possible Hacksilver. Fragment of silver sheet, with scalloped edge, two vertical folds and two vertically incised lines on its external surface. A tiny circular hole (diameter c.1mm) at the end of one of the incised lines may relate to its attachment; given the size this might have been sewn or tied to clothing or a bead string. Alternatively, the folds and incised lines might suggest this to be a fragment from a small pyramid-shaped bell. The collection of scrap silver is also characteristic of the Viking Age period. Suggested date: Early Medieval: 800-1100. Length: 16.71mm,…

It is probably early-medieval in date, 10th - 11th century. A similarly shaped one was found in a late 10th century deposit from York.
