A fragment of an iron hand-bell plated with copper-alloy using the 'fusion-plating process' (Bourke 1980; 1983). Only part of one corner survives, with three faces represented below. The crown is flat and appears to have been quadrangular in form. An iron shank - probably the remains of the handle - is visible above and below the crown in the corner. The face flares to the break below; the corner is rounded. The wider face has a mass of iron corrosion that forms a criss-cross pattern, which may indicate textile. This is potentially important, as Tim Young has established the use of te…

Early medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian) copper alloy bell, 28mm in length, 26mm wide and 15mm thick with a weight of 7.41grams. The object is triangular in form and hexagonal in cross section and is incomplete. It is missing its apex, clapper and part of its lower edge. The object is formed of six triangular panels and those which are complete have a concave lower edge, forming points at each corner. This type of bell is described as a 'Norse' bell because of their association with Scandinavian sites and date to the period 900-1100. Similar examples include NLM-0A3A38 LIN-C65B75. …

Two fragments from the same Early Medieval hand-bell, dating to the period c.AD 600-900. The largest fragment comprises the top of the bell. It is rectangular in plan, flat, and measures 43 x 38mm. The perimeter of the bell curves downwards on all sides to form the body of the bell, which if retaining its present shape would mean that it was sub-rectangular in section. Part of the bell wall survives as a separate fragment, which measures 39 x 23 x 6mm. The bell is made of iron, but an extensive coating of copper-alloy is visible on both the interior and the exterior. This suggests …

Four copper alloy fragments of an Early Medieval copper-fused iron handbell, dating to the period c.AD 600-900. The largest fragment appears to be from the corner of the crown. Although fragmentary, the crow appears to have been quadrangular. A fragment of the side wall of the face survives. A projection is present at the corner of the top and terminates in a worn break, perhaps forming the remains of the loop. The other three fragments are broadly rectangular in plan. All fragments are undecorated and have a brown patina on the surface, covered with heavy iron corrosion. Patches of c…

A copper-alloy and iron incomplete early-medieval bell. The bell is formed of sheet copper-alloy with iron sheet on the interior and exterior. The bell is 45.6mm in height and has a complete D shaped projecting loop which is rectangular in cross section (8.3m m wide and 4.45mm thick). Below the loop the bell is 9.35mm wide and 39.05mm and widens and expands to the base where it is 37.95mm in length and 36.2mm wide and 1.85mm thick. Internally there is the remains of a iron projection, the majority of which is now missing. Cormac Bourke comments: This latest find, although it's s…

Roman to Early Medieval copper alloy bell possibly from a harness for a horse. It is an elongated hexagon in plan and sub triangular in profile. There are small knops or feet at the ends of the longer edges. The damaged, and possibly distorted, body is surmounted by a lozenge shaped suspension loop. This is 17mm high, 20mm wide, with an internal diameter of 11mm. The clapper is lost and the lower edge of the body is damaged. No close parallel has been found so far, but the suspension loops form is suggestive of a Roman (e.g. SUR-E23AFD) or possibly Medieval date, while the body form i…

An incomplete copper-alloy hexagonal 'norse' clapper bell of Early Medieval date. It is missing the clapper due to old breaks, now worn. The sides are divided into six evenly spaced straight faces with shallow U-shaped notches at the base. At the top is an incomplete integrally cast rectangular suspension loop. Inside the bell are traces of iron corrosion, probably from the now missing clapper. There are similar examples recorded on the PAS database (LIN-E4CF66), (NMS-906EA4), (NMS-116451), (PUBLIC-4EFBB6).

An incomplete Early-Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian) cast white-metal 'Norse' clapper bell (c. 900-c. 1000). This bell is broadly conical in form with a relatively large rectangular suspension loop at the top. The body of the bell has seven facets of uneven size. Inside, at the apex, an iron loop is presumably for the suspension of a clapper. The outer surface is dull and silvery and the inner surface is largely covered with off-white corrosion products. The iron loop is corroded and in poor condition. A portion of the lower part of the body is missing due to breaks. Height: 23.…

A circular patch of iron corrosion is visible at the top, perhaps representing the remains of the cross-piece (handle). An incomplete copper alloy bell of early-medieval date (broadly 10th century). The bell is of hexagonal section, with straight sides tapering towards the top, where it is surmounted by a damaged projection which would have formed the lower part of a suspension loop. The six sides that surround the open bottom end are concave and have been turned inwards to create a lobe on each of the six corners. Both inner and outer surfaces of the object are a greenish brown with a heavily corroded patina.

An early medieval copper-alloy bell. The bell chamber is of hexagonal section, tapering towards the top, where it is surmounted by a damaged loop. Inside the bell is a large amount of iron corrosion probably due to the corrosion of the clapper. Two sides of the bell have been slightly squashed inwards. The object has a green patina. This type of bell is sometimes known as a "Norse" bell, and is characteristic of the Danelaw and Irish Sea region during the tenth century.

Two joining fragments of a silver sheet pyramidical object of probably hexagonal outline. The apex is missing but the greater parts of three sides and a fragment of the fourth are extant. At the base of each side a V-shaped cut-out is flanked by two very subtle scallops. Height more than 21.2mm. Width at base c.15mm. Weight 1.50g. Perhaps a version of the Norse bell more familiar in copper alloy (Mainman and Rogers 200, 2599 and 2649, fig. 1294 no. 10528). One possible example in silver comes from Rampton, Notts (NLM-C90184). 10th century.
